      Buffum family fonds

      This fonds consists of 271 photographs, 6 audio reels, 3 sound cassettes and 2 cm of textual material. The photographs were taken and collected by the Buffum Family and depict the covers or interior images of personalized Christmas cards from bush pilots and other people who stayed with the Buffum family. The textual material is made up of the diary of Louise Buffum dated from 1939 to 1945. The sound recordings contain an interview conducted by the Territorial Archivist, David Rudkin with Lyn Orchuk in 1985.

      The fonds consists of 2214 photographs (1232 black and white negatives, 982 colour negatives) created by both Gerry Reimann and Bob Wilson during the store’s operation. The photography is a mix of commissioned work, such as portrait or family photography, schools, businesses, organizations, or government work, and non-commissioned photography, such as community events or photography of YK Foto. Due to this, the commissioned work has multiple copyright holders, which are noted where appropriate.

      Series consists of records relating to the operation of Yellowknife Radio Limited (also known as Yellowknife Radio and Records Shop and YK Radio). Records include financial statements, meeting minutes, and advertisements, as well as recordings of local bands that were made in the store.

      YK Radio was a retail establishment for records, radios and appliances in downtown Yellowknife. Harold Glick began the business in October 1948, selling products and offering repair services. The store was initially in a wall tent next door to the Gold Range Hotel, and by 1952 had moved into a new building. In 1958 an addition was added to the shop. The store’s offerings expanded to include jewelry and furniture. As of 1968-1970, the company had three directors: Harold Glick (President), Zelda Glick (Secretary-Treasurer), and Jacob Isaac Glick (Vice President). By 1972, Derek A. Finall had replaced J.I. Glick as a Director. In 1986 the business was sold to Roy Williams.

      Series contains the records of Lizel Holdings, a holdings company, and Yellowknife Tog Shop Ltd., including documentation of the construction of a department store building at 50th Avenue and 50th Street in Yellowknife (5002-5006 Franklin Avenue). This building opened in 1968 and housed the new Yellowknife Radio store as well as The Tog Shop clothing store. Both J.I. Glick and Harold Glick were Directors of Lizel Holdings, while Harold Glick, Zelda Glick and Elizabeth Maybroda were the Directors of the Tog Shop Ltd., which was incorporated in 1966. J.I. Glick was the mortgagee for the Tog Shop Ltd.

      Series also includes some records relating to the design of La Gondola restaurant.
