        This accession consists of a large extent of unprocessed audio-visual material, depicting primarily Federal health services across the Northwest Territories from the 1960s to the 1980s. These include slide presentations about a 50th anniversary celebration of the St. Theresa’s Hospital in Chesterfield Inlet, a presentation on nursing in the north and a presentation on the services provided by the Department of Health, which is also accompanied by audio presentations in four indigenous languages. As well, there is a large extent of photographs, audio recordings, and video.

        This fonds consists of 619 colour transparencies, 36 b&w photographs and one colour photograph. Additionally, the NWT Archives created 340 digital files that were created from original 303 colour slides, 36 black and white photographs and one colour photograph that were initially loaned to the NWT Archives in 2005. The majority of the images depict the community of Aklavik and include images of the All Saints Anglican Mission and Church, All Saints Hospital, Royal Canadian Mountain Police buildings and boat "Aklavik", as well as aircraft, the Anglican school, Aklavik Post Office and many identified people from the community. Many of the images are of patients at the All Saints Hospital. There are also images of Inuvik that include buildings in the community such as the Federal School and Roman Catholic church, the hospital, Semler's store, and Mackenzie Hotel, as well as the unveiling of the Inuvik Monument by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. In addition, there are images of Fort Good Hope, Lutselk'e (Snowdrift), Detah (Dettah), Bathurst Inlet, Tuktoyaktuk, Fort Reliance, Fort Rae, Herschel Island, and Reindeer Station. The images taken in 1970's and 1980's are of Yellowknife and include images of the July 1 parade, art work at the Yellowknife Gallery, Yellowknife City Hall, exhibits at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Northern United Place, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Con Mine), and Giant Mine.

        This fonds consists of 83 b&w and coloured photographs documenting Merle's life in Yellowknife between 1947-1949. Subjects include Merle and her co-workers in their professional capacity as nurses, residents in Yellowknife and the surrounding area, and places in Yellowknife including the hospital, the Yellowknife Inn, and Yellowknife Public School.

        The collection consists primarily of slides taken by Helene Caufield during her time working as a nurse stationed in the Northwest Territories. Photograph locations include: Aklavik, Fort McPherson, Reindeer Station, Inuvik, Fort Simpson, and Yellowknife. Topics include scenery and community views, Anglican churches, hospitals, and hostels, students and patients, and activities including sewing, harvesting ice, making dryfish, picnics, and walks. The collection also includes a portrait of Helene during her training and a two page list of photograph captions.

        The videos are entitled 'Nurse'. Produced by Goldi Productions in 1986, each of the videos contains four one minute spots. One of the videos in is English, the other two are in Inuktitut and Slavey respectively.

        This fonds consist of approximately 7.40 m of textual records and 156 photographs from the Department of Health.

        The bulk of the material relates to various committees in which the Department of Health was the lead agency. There are records from the Pharmacare Formulary Advisory Committee, Medical Advisory Committee, Health Coordinating Committee, Committee on Medical Legal Concerns, Minutes from the Certified Nursing Assistants Committee, Health Facilities Planning and Construction and the Community Health Advisory Committee. In addition, there is material that was generated by the Management Services Division. The records, dated 1982-1990, are primarily administrative records including minutes and reports from various committee and secretariats.

        In addition there is material which was generated by the Mackenzie Regional Health Board and dates between 1988-1993. The files relate to Nursing Conferences and Committees, St. John Ambulance Committee, Maternal Prenatal Committee, Community Health Committee and Senior Management Meetings. There are also records from the Department of Social Services relating to Social Services Management Committee Meetings and Health and Social Services Training Programs.

        There are records from the Legislation and Policy division, including relating to the amalgamation of the departments of Health and Social Services, as well as records relating to the transfer of Baffin region health assets from the federal Department of Health as well as records relating to the Medical Patient Search Project (MPSP).
        The MPSP project was undertaken between 1988 and 1991 to search for the location of medical patients who were sent south for treatment and subsequently lost to their families.

        Material from the Health Promotions and Education Division includes published reports, brochures and newsletters from the Department of Health dating from 1977-[1995]. The material includes reports on health conditions, ambulance services and poison control. There are also information pamphlets on a wide variety of topics for public information, career promotion within the Department, an interpreters handbook, the internal departmental newsletter N.W.T Healthbeat, as well as one large information kit on northern cuisine published in French.

        Also included within the fonds are 140 colour slides and 16 colour photographs from the Legislation and Policy division. The slides were part of the Information Services section's slide library. The images include photography of health services, staff, infrastructure and programs offered by the Department of Health and date between 1960 and 1981. The colour photographs are related to the Medical Patient Search Project, and feature cemeteries where northern patients were known to have been buried.
