Scope and content

One folder consisting of seven typewritten letters from Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Officer in Charge (OC) Cyril N.K. “Nordie” Kirk to correspondents in Regina, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Winnipeg depicting his life as a newcomer and as the RCMP OC in Aklavik. The recipients of the letters include RCMP Superintendent “Tiny” Martin, RCMP Inspector Doug Forrest, RCMP Inspector Fred Regan and Mary, RCMP Inspector Harry Maxted and Amanda, RCMP Inspector “Perlie” Perlson and Kay, and CNK Kirk’s mother. Also included is one typewritten letter from RCMP Inspector Doug Forrest to CNK Kirk. The letters date from September 21, 1945 through July 7, 1946.

Cyril Kirk's description in one of the letters on page 9 may cause offense because he used outdated language to describe Indigenous Peoples and peoples with mixed heritage. We have reproduced the original as is because it is a part of the original historical record. If you have feedback or questions, please contact the NWT Archives.
