This fonds consists of 0.1 cm of textual records, 859 photographs (242 black and white negatives, 300 black and white prints - original masters; 766 black and white digital files (TIFF), 15 colour digital files (TIFF) - archival masters; 55 black and white negatives, 23 black and white prints - original and archival masters), 15 8mm film reels (original masters), four 16mm film reels (original masters), 19 Betacam SP videocassettes (archival masters), and one 8mm film reel (original and archival master).

The textual records consist of a membership certificate. The majority of the photographs document Sam’s life prospecting, mining, and trapping between 1930 and 1950, while a smaller selection document Sam’s nuclear family life beginning in 1952. There are five main series of photographs: work in the Great Bear Lake region with the Northern Transportation Company and uranium mines in the early to mid-1930s; gold mining, camping, and prospecting in the Great Slave Lake area in the mid-1930s through the 1940s; work on the Canol project in 1942-1943; trapping on the barren lands (tundra) of the Keewatin region near Clinton-Colden Lake and the Back River area in the late 1930s to 1950; and Sam’s nuclear family life from 1952 onwards. Communities documented in this fonds include early images of Yellowknife’s Old Town and Latham Island, Fort Franklin (Deline), Cameron Bay camps, Norman Wells, Fort Resolution, and Fort Smith. The moving images document being on the land, prospecting, and hunting between 1930 and 1960, and town and family life between 1950 and 1970.

The digital files (TIFF) are scans of the original black and white negatives, black and white prints, and colour negatives, while the videocassettes are transfers from the original 8mm and 16mm film reels, all created by Sam Otto and loaned by his son Sheldon in 2000. The majority of the originally loaned items were returned by Sam Otto's daughter Lorraine in 2015, in addition to some newly offered materials.

Records include meeting minutes and correspondence related to Intergovernmental and Arctic Circle meetings, as well as Premier meetings.

This accession consists of records of the Petroleum Products Division of the Department of Public Works and Services, including meeting materials for the Senior Management Committee, a report on All Weather Roads in the Tli Cho Region, records of the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Fuel Working Group, fuel supply and pricing management, and management of a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian Coast Guard.

This accession consists of records from the Policy and Strategic Planning division of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and its predecessor, the Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development, relating to the Senior Management Committee, agreements and memoranda of understanding, associated boards and agencies, Mackenzie Gas Project, the Interim Resource Management Assistance program, human resources, a possible job action, and policies and directives. This accession consists of records from the Directorate of the Department of Municipal and Community Development, especially those relating to resource development and the Mackenzie Valley Gas Pipeline Project (MGP). General Directorate records including Senior Management Committee records (2006-2009) and entries in the GNWT Public Committees, Boards and Councils Handbook. MGP-related records include Joint Coordinating Committee and MGP Intervention Workshop records, MGP GNWT Handbook, organizational charts and job descriptions for the Pipeline Readiness Office, draft GNWT General Submission to the Joint Review Panel on the MGP, MGP Socio-Economic Agreement, reports from regional workshops on social impacts of the MGP, records of stakeholder consultation meetings, local impact assessments, and pipeline readiness funding administration, presentation materials, correspondence, reports, proposals, minutes, and briefing material.

Records are comprised of one report entitled "Diary Report of Reconnaissance Trip Camp Canol to MacMillan Pass." It was prepared by J. Gordon Turnbull and Sverdrub and Parcel, Architect and Engineer, Canol Project, 1943.

Records consist of a copy of "The Canol Pictorial" by P.A. Harris (1944), correspondence sent by Russell Alexander (Alex) Hemstock to his parents and siblings during his time on the Canol Project between 1943-1945; a letter from Guy Blanchet dated March 1945 describing the routes between Norman Wells to the Canol pipeline; and two letters from Emily Keeley (Hemstock's wife) addressed to her parents from August 1945. This accession also includes six published academic works of Alex Hemstock, on the subject of permafrost and arctic conditions, produced between 1949-1978.

While working for Imperial Oil in 1945, Alex Hemstock produced a report for Imperial Oil titled Operations on the No. 1 Canol Pipeline. His paper from this period is the only first-hand document on the operations of the Canol pipeline. A copy of this manuscript is in the PWNHC reference library.
