James Ayrhart fonds

This fonds consists of 43 black and white photographic prints taken in and around Yellowknife. The images show people including James Ayrhart, his wife Doris McGill, Geddes Webster and Cam Wallbridge, as well as places in Yellowknife such as the Liquor Store, Mining Recorders Office and Yellowknife Hotel. There are also images of prospecting camps and various views of Mr. Ayrhart's DC3, the Yellowknife Express. Also included in the accession are two autobiographical accounts of some of Mr. Ayrhart's experiences in the Northwest Territories. One contains identifications for some of the photographs; the other concerns the purchase and sale of the Yellowknife Express.

This fonds consists of 1.5 cm of textual material and two photographs. The text is comprised of copies of the proceedings of the 1972, 1973 and 1974 Arctic Air Symposiums sponsored by the Canadian Air Transportation Administration. Jackson attended these meetings in her capacity as a member of the group working to establish a search and rescue group within the Northwest Territories. The photographs show a Canadian Forces Lockheed C-130 being unloaded at Alert in 1973 and May Willmot, a writer from Ottawa and a member of the Canadian Air Force standing beside a signpost at Alert. In addition, there is also a copy of the proceedings of a meeting held in Yellowknife in 1975 in conjunction with the United Nation's International Women's Year.

The fonds consists of 42.6 cm of textual records and 4 maps created and used by Koenen's Air Service while operating a charter air service in Yellowknife, primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. The fonds also includes some personal records of owner Henry Koenen, including records of flying experiences with other companies in the 1930s and 1940s. The records include log books, correspondence, bills of sale, contracts and agreements, inspection forms, insurance information, payroll information, accident statements, Pilots' Flying Histories, invoices and receipts, an account ledger, income tax and financial statements, Air Transport Board reports, a promotional pamphlet, and maps showing areas flown to often.

The fonds consists of 16.5 cm of textual records, 23 colour slides, and 20 maps created, collected, and used by Parsons during the course of his career as a pilot. The textual records include correspondence, certifications, exams and study notes for various aircraft, and records of training and flights taken. The slides appear to relate to his flights in the Arctic and show a number of unidentified people and communities. The cartographic material consists of maps, which Parsons used as working documents to plan routes.

This fonds consists of a typescript diary of Richard Bonnycastle's 1968 journey by plane from Fort Garry (Manitoba) through Alberta and down the Mackenzie River and back to Fort Garry. The narrative includes references to the trips he made while he was district manager for the Hudson's Bay Company. Places he visited on his journey included Fort Smith, Yellowknife, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik.

Rex Terpening fonds

This fonds consists of 511 copy negatives, approximately 1 cm of textual material and 1 audiocassette. The negatives were copied from original prints that were originally contained in three photo albums, which were compiled by Rex Terpening during the early years of his career. Included among the images are portraits of airline personnel he encountered during his travels, photographs of aircraft operating in the north, and views of communities in the north. The textual material consists of a Spence McDonough Air Transport, Ltd. brochure and one copy of a radio tribute to Rex Terpening. The audiocassette contains an interview conducted by Rex Terpening with Charles Reiach, a trader who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company and lived in the Northwest Territories in the late 1920s and 1930s.

The textual material dates from 1978-1988 and consists of Exhibit Storyline and Exhibit Content Plans for the North and South Galleries at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. In addition, there are Exhibit scripts for Chapters in Our History, The North before People, Greenland Kayak Exhibit, Dene Women's Art Exhibit and the traveling exhibit about "The Land." The textual material also includes two Pilot's Log Books from 1928 and 1946 that belonged to Walter James Beaumont. The sound recordings contain interviews with J. Davids and H. Hollick-Kenyon, Denny May, Cam Jordheim and Mark Dodd. The content of the material focuses on aviation in the north, bush pilots, and Wop May. It is likely that this material was used in developing the aviation exhibit at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. The 2 videocassettes are in Umatic or Betacam formats and consist master copies of "Trapline Lifeline" and "Wings of Change." "Trapline Lifeline" was a traveling exhibit that examined the history and modern-day realities of fur trapping. The exhibit contained an audio-visual section that included video footage of interviews with trappers and an overview of life in northern communities. "Wings of Change" is the video component from the aviation gallery at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
