Records include files related to Commissioner's tours, departmental reorganization, goals and objectives, reports from the regions, reports from specific communities on Public Works projects and maintenance of public buildings such as schools. Additionally, there are records concerning land claims, the Business Incentive Policy (BIP), capital assistance, lease and contracting policies, the Capital Site Planning Committee, decentralization and privatization efforts.

Records include minutes, agendas and reports from the Audit Committee, Senior Management Committee and Operations Committee; agreements with the Department of Justice regarding the Safety Education program; and regulations for the Assessment Division.

Records include minutes, agendas and reports from the Executive Committee, Management Group, and Investment Committee, as well as records related to the Workers' Compensation Board Review Panel, a Legislative Action Paper, and a client service audit which was conducted by the consultants Kellough & Company.

The sound recordings contain interviews with elders from Cambridge Bay, which were conducted by David Pelly while working on the Mount Pelly Territorial Park Project.

The collection is comprised of photographs that were deleted from the files up to early 1990. Themes include involvement of the Government of the Northwest Territories in housing, education and training, arts and crafts, tourism, transportation and industry. Also included are images documenting native land use, community activities, facilities, special events and people. Commissioners and the Council are particularly well documented, especially during the earlier period. Also extensively represented are Expo '86 and the Arctic Winter Games. Most were photographed by the Government Photographer, Audio Visual section, although some were purchased or acquired from other sources. Photographers include Mike Van Duffelen, Bob Wilson and Tessa Macintosh.

These records document the museums and heritage activity of the Government of the Northwest Territories. They provide evidence of the functions of the Northwest Territories Historical Advisory Board, the Northwest Territories Heritage Council, and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Included are documents from the Archaeological and Historic Sites program, Education and Extension program, Territorial Plaquing program, Exhibits program, Museum grants, NWT Archives, and Archaeological Permits. The records consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, policy, procedures, regulations and a few photographs that remain in the original files. Also included are files on various conferences such as the Canadian Conference on Historical Resources, the Northern Museums Conference, and Committees such as the Interdepartmental Committee on Archaeology, the Canada-NWT Consultative Committee on Parks and the Museum Advisory Committee.

Many of the records were created when the division was part of the Department of Justice and Public Services, and some date back to earlier predecessors such as the NWT Historical Advisory Board. Records include files related to archaeological and land use permits, minutes of staff meetings, reports and publications, museum policies, support for community heritage related efforts, and special projects such as the Trapline - Lifeline exhibit.

Records consist of correspondence, reports by regional and community officers, minutes, field project reports, report forms recording information on polar bear and musk-ox kills and fish landings. The records relate to a variety of activities such as hunting, trapping, enforcement, animal studies and fisheries. The records show evidence of the division's activities, programs delivered, and the impact the division's policies may have had on the residents of the Northwest Territories. Reports from the administrative regions of the Government of the Northwest Territories have been kept in an effort to document regional activities and responses.

Records deal with recreation centres, the Northwest Territories Centennial in 1970, Arctic Winter Games, Northern Games, NWT Youth Services and some regional reports.

The images depict human impacts on the landscape, such as seismic lines, mine sites, and dams, as well as communities including Yellowknife, Rae (Behchoko), Fort Providence, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, Fort Norman (Tulita), and Inuvik. They were taken by Ken Taylor while he was working on a land use mapping project for Environment Canada.

Much of the accession is currently unidentified. Some of the identified reels of film concern events in the Northwest Territories, such as the Commissioner's tour of the central arctic, 1970 Arctic Winter Games, Caribou Carnival in Yellowknife, Camp Unity and a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) production on whaling in the north.

Records include moving images, photographs, and one file of reports generated by trips taken by Commissioner Stuart Hodgson. The Commissioners' Tours included visits to the upper Mackenzie, Nahanni and Liard River Area (June 2-6, 1969), the central arctic (Aug. 25 - Sept. 5, 1969), the Mackenzie Delta (Oct. 13-19, 1970), and the central arctic (May 5-8, 1971). One of the films contains a narrative by Commissioner Hodgson on the Arctic Winter Games.

The moving images document a project to build a mooseskin boat. The text consists of copies of the daily journals of the project kept by Beryl Gillespie and a copy of her final summary report. The 17 photographs were taken by Beryl Gillespie.

This accession consists of records from the Language Bureau library. Most of the records were created by ECE and its predecessors, the Department of Education and the Department of Culture and Communications, but the accession also includes records created by the Department of Information, the Department of Justice, and various workshops and literacy programs hosted or coordinated by ECE and its predecessors. Records include reports on bilingual education, the curriculum from the Inuit perspective, interpreting in the NWT Courts, and literacy and language projects, including the Dene Standardization Project, the Arviat Language Research Project, and the Rae-Edzo Literacy Project; an operational review of the Language Bureau; curriculum guides, teacher’s manuals, kits and posters for K-12 language teaching, including the Dene Kede curriculum and other materials in Inuktitut, Gwich’in, North Slavey, South Slavey, Dogrib (Tłı̨chǫ), Chipewyan, and Cree; a classroom assistant training manual; the Language Bureau’s newsletter, Dene Yati; teacher’s and student’s manuals for the Language Bureau’s Cree Language Program; a syllabus for teaching Dene languages literacy; audio cassettes and a course outline from a North Slavey course produced by Arctic College; training manuals, terminology lists, and program review materials from the Interpreter/Translator Program; Chipewyan and Dogrib (Tłı̨chǫ) language lessons from the Teacher Education Program; and training materials for legal interpreters.

The sound recording documents an interview with Charles Reiach. The recording includes a narration of a film donated to the NWT Archives by Charles Reiach and his experiences as an HBC trader from 1926-1936.

Records were created and accumulated by the School Programs Development division, and its predecessors: Program Services division, Programs and Evaluations Branch, Education Programs and Evaluation division and Linguistic Programs division of the Department of Education.

This accession consists of one map entitled "Map of the North West part of Canada, Indian Territories & Hudson's Bay, 1857". It was compiled and drawn by Thomas Devine, Provincial Land Surveyor and Draftsman, by the order of the Hon. Joseph Cauchon, Commissioner of Crown Lands. The map is marked with the location of French Canadian forts existing at the time of conquest, and those that existed before 1713. Also included is an insert showing the profiles of various routes for the Pacific Railroad and a table of estimates for the Indigenous population of British North America.

This accession consists of two copies of the agreement, dated 20 September 1986, to establish Ellesmere Island National Park Reserve. One copy of the agreement was signed in the park at Tanquary Fiord; the other was signed at Resolute. The signed agreements are stored in their original official folders. Also included in this accession are 9 colour photographic prints documenting the community of Resolute, the signing of the agreement, images of Tanquary Fiord and post signing festivities at Resolute.

Records also include guidelines, correspondence, and memos related to social assistance appeal procedures, correspondence and requests for a group home in Rankin Inlet, and correspondence and service contracts of the repatriation agent for the Keewatin region.
