R.A. Hemstock collection

Records consist of a copy of "The Canol Pictorial" by P.A. Harris (1944), correspondence sent by Russell Alexander (Alex) Hemstock to his parents and siblings during his time on the Canol Project between 1943-1945; a letter from Guy Blanchet dated March 1945 describing the routes between Norman Wells to the Canol pipeline; and two letters from Emily Keeley (Hemstock's wife) addressed to her parents from August 1945. This accession also includes six published academic works of Alex Hemstock, on the subject of permafrost and arctic conditions, produced between 1949-1978.

While working for Imperial Oil in 1945, Alex Hemstock produced a report for Imperial Oil titled Operations on the No. 1 Canol Pipeline. His paper from this period is the only first-hand document on the operations of the Canol pipeline. A copy of this manuscript is in the PWNHC reference library.

The accession relates to the Canol Project and includes air navigation maps of northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories from 1940s, river survey maps of the Mackenzie River (entire length) which include substantial details regarding depth, shoreline, cabins or structures along the river. The collection also includes engineering schematics produced by US Engineers for the US War Department depicting the Camp Canol layout, pipelines across the Mackenzie River, oil tank farms, possible routes for the pipeline, pumpstation layouts documenting the proposed flow of oil from NWT to Yukon and onto US locations, and detail drawings of specific technologies.

This accession consists of records of the Petroleum Products Division of the Department of Public Works and Services, including meeting materials for the Senior Management Committee, a report on All Weather Roads in the Tli Cho Region, records of the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Fuel Working Group, fuel supply and pricing management, and management of a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian Coast Guard.

The slides are divided into three series. Series A consists of items :0001 to :0034, which were taken in the Nahanni Butte area in 1970 possibly by Norman Simmons. Series B consists of items :0035 to :0050 which show the construction of a styrofoam igloo by Erik Anoee and David Akkoekotak at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Series C consists of items :0051 to :0068 which show sites of the Canol Project. The photographs from Series C were taken in the winter of 1977, possibly by the Curator of Collections from the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Included in these images are buildings such as chapels, warehouses, repair shops, power plants and hangars.
