The first cassette contains an interview with Norma Stedman and Wyn Manifold who taught in the North during the 1950's and 1960's. The second cassette is an interview with Norman Simmons who discusses teaching school in Cape Dorset between 1948-1950. The third cassette contains a discussion about education in the North during the 1960s. The interviewer and subject are unknown. The fourth cassette contains a narration by Cathy McGregor about moose hide tanning in Nahanni Butte.

The records are from the Central Registry file system and contain files from the following program areas: Director of Education (70 block) and Assistant Director of Education (71 block).

Records include a 1972 Survey of Education in the Northwest Territories; a 1973 handbook for curriculum development entitled "Learning in the Middle Years" produced by the Programme Development Division; a handbook for curriculum development entitled "Elementary Education in the Northwest Territories" produced by the Curriculum Division; and a resource book on consumer education and money management classes entitled "The Northern Dollar: Handbook for Basic Money Management" produced by the Education Programs and Evaluation Division.

The records were created by various divisions of the Department of Education.

These records, dated between 1968-1978, come from the Central Registry and were generated by the Director of Education (70 block), School Services (73 block) and Continuing and Special Education (75 block). The records relate to pupil residences, student hostels, teacher education programs, as well as adult vocational training centres and courses. There are Quarterly Returns for Breynat Hall, Lapointe Hall, Grollier Hall, Stringer Hall, Fleming Hall and Chief Jimmy Bruneau that date from 1969-1974.

The slides depict the following communities: Inuvik (Series 1); Trout Lake (Series 2); Jean Marie River (Series 3); Snare Lake (Series 4); Yellowknife (Series 5); Fort Wrigley (Series 6); Rae Edzo (Series 7); Tuktoyaktuk (Series 8); Tungsten (Series 9); Fort Franklin (Series 10); Coral Harbour (Series 11); Pelly Bay (Series 12); Coppermine (Series 13); Pine Point (Series 14); and Hay River (Series 15). The images are dated between 1980-1985. In addition, there are 80 slides with an accompanying audiocassette and manual from a unit entitled "Our Students, Our Future: Shaping Education in the NWT" (Series 16). This unit was developed in 1990 and included images that depicted students and education related activities in the Northwest Territories. A manual and audiocassette, produced by the Student Support Division, to help assist in the slide presentation is included with this accession. There is also 1 cm of textual material consisting of descriptions for the slide presentations on Pelly Bay and Yellowknife.

The records consists of files from the Central Registry 70 Block, 72 Block, 73 Block, 75 Block, 77 Block and some quarterly residence returns from Breynat Hall (1969-1970) and Grollier Hall (1972-1974)l. Specifically the files relate to: Education - General, school programs in Detah, Grollier Hall in Inuvik, Continuing and Special Education and some Administrative services reports. There are also audit reports for Grollier Hall from 1971 and 1973 and these reports include staff lists.

Records include daily school attendance registers from the elementary and secondary school grades at St. Patrick's Separate School in Yellowknife (1953-1970) and from Sir John Franklin High School (1959-1960, 1961-1963, 1964-1965) in Yellowknife. The information recorded in the registers includes the names of pupils, community of origin, disc, treaty or band numbers, attendance records and the names of the parents. The record of attendance is divided between "Eskimo", "Indian" and "Other".

The records consist of a 1982 yearbook from William McDonald Junior High in Yellowknife. It contains images of the students and teachers at the school and gives brief descriptions of school events held during the past school year.

Records include photographs of the construction of Sir John Franklin High School and the Akaitcho Hall residence at Yellowknife in 1957 and 1958. The photographs were taken by the contractor on the job, W. Weir.

Records include correspondence and meeting minutes regarding an evaluation of the In-Service Training Program, correspondence and publicity materials relating to the promotion of literacy, and agendas, correspondence and reports from the Circumpolar Conference on Literacy held in 1990.

Textual records consist of one 1960 yearbook, entitled "Borean" which was produced by the staff and students at Fort Smith Federal High School. The yearbook contains photographs of the staff and students and articles about both the Fort Smith Federal High School and the Fort Smith Federal Day School - an elementary school. This was the first yearbook to be produced in the NWT, and contains greetings from a number of federal politicians including Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, Alvin Hamilton, the Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources, and R.G. Robertson, the Commissioner of the NWT. The yearbook also contains a number of biographical sketches of long-time residents of Fort Smith and a history of the town.

This accession was generated by the History of Education Project undertaken by Norman Macpherson. Records include source material collected by Mr. Macpherson, including original files, copies of reports, and transcripts of oral history tapes, as well as drafts of portions of his book on the history of education in the Northwest Territories.
