Part of Northwest Territories. Legislative Assembly fonds

Records date from 1888-1991 and consist of published reports, pamphlets, brochures and bound ordinances. The pamphlets and brochures relate to the Legislative Assembly's operations, symbology, projects, interest in a pipeline and talks of forming a new territory (Nunavut). Records also include the rules of the preceding body, the Council of the Northwest Territories, as well as the rules of the Assembly from 1984 to 1991. There are published reports on priorities for the North, election reports, electoral boundaries, administrative structure for Nunavut, a spousal assault task force report, and a Denedeh government proposal for restructuring of the Government of the Northwest Territories.
Also included in this accession are ordinances dated 1888 and 1895 and bound ordinances dating 1950 through 1981. There is also a book of statutes from 1985.

The textual records consist of one photocopy of the words of the song "Home in the North" and two copies of a certificate stating that the recipient is a "...blood brother of Raymond the Raven". Many of the photographs depict traditional forms of transportation within the Northwest Territories. There are photographs of stern-wheelers, York boats, scows, kayaks, tugboats and barges. A number of images portray Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) posts and employees. Some photographs depict the traditional lifestyles of the Dene and Inuvialuit who frequented the Mackenzie River Valley. There are also images of the White Eagle Mine on the Camsell River and the Eldorado Radium Mine at Great Bear Lake. In addition, there are 23 aerial photographs of communities within the Northwest Territories that were taken in the 1930s by the Royal Canadian Air. The records have been arranged into three series: 1) communities; 2) marine transportation; 3) aerial photographs.

Records include one photocopy of Frank Russell's journal dated from April 26, 1893 to August 18, 1894. The journal documents Russell's trip from Edmonton to Lake Athabasca, and along the Mackenzie River to Fort Good Hope. In addition, it covers a trip between Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake, and along the Coppermine River. The journal also contains a limited vocabulary list for the Dogrib (Tlicho), Loucheux (Gwich'in) and Yellowknives Dene. Requests for copies should be directed to the Smithsonian Institute.

Records include photographs and a photocopy of a monograph entitled "Historical Sketch of the Origin and Work of the Hay River Mission, Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories." Most of the images are stored in two photograph albums. The first album contains images taken by Reverend Marsh between 1893 and 1907. The second album contains photographs taken by C.W. Mathers, a professional photographer from Edmonton, who toured the Mackenzie River communities in 1901. There are also some loose images taken by Reverend Marsh. The images depict traditional Dene and Inuit lifestyles in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Subjects include mooseskin boats, scows, dog teams, skin tents and kayaks. Many of the images document the development of St. Peter's Anglican Mission at Hay River. There are photographs of the church, boarding school, mission staff and the students who attended the school. A number of images depict Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) posts and the steamers and scows that were used by the Hudson's Bay Company to transport goods in the north. Locations include Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson, Fort Norman, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Hay River and Peel River. The records have been arranged into three series: Series I - Reverend T.J. Marsh photograph album; Series II - C.W. Mathers album; Series III - Reverend T.J. Marsh.
