Board of Trade [Seven men, four of them students, stand beside sign: Canada's newest capital welcomes you to the NWT Yellowknife 335 miles, 1967][Akaitcho Hall students painted eight of these road signs to be erected on the Mackenzie Highway during the summer of 1967, Yellowknife's first year as capital. We were actually declared capital of the NWT on May 1, by Federal Order-In-Council (News of the North June 22, 1967)][News clipping: Frank Gonda, art teacher at the Sir John Franklin school, is pictured above presenting lawyer Malcolm Fraser, chairman of the tourist committee of the Yellowknife Board of Trade, with one of eight signs that are to be placed approximately at fifty-mile intervals along the Mackenzie Highway. Ray Stoodley of Premier Electrical, chairman of the Board of Trade’s publicity committee, was also present. The sign shown here will appear at the Alberta-NWT border. It and seven other signs were made under the supervision of Frank Gonda and Glenn Dies, the vice-principal of the school. The boys who did the work are all from Sir John Franklin and are living at Akaitcho Hall. They are John Poitras, William Snowshoe, Joe Erasmus, and James Washie.]
