John Bayly

The records were gathered by John Bayly in his role as Inquiry Counsel for the Bourassa Inquiry. The Inquiry was conducted by Madam Justice Carole Conrad of Alberta and held in Yellowknife. The proceedings began on March 26, 1990 and ended with Madam Conrad's findings that were issued on September 28, 1990. The records consist of copies of the following: preliminary proceedings, transcripts of the hearings, exhibits including video and one audio cassette of the press conference and public meeting held by the Government of the Northwest Territories, Justice Minister Michael Ballantyne on Dec. 21, 1989, submissions, letters of complaint, authorities, the inquiry findings and press clippings.

Elizabeth Cass

The textual records consist of transcripts that contain Dr. Cass' personal observations on the Gwich'in. These observations were made in 1959. Her recollections cover such topics as puberty, religious beliefs, burial customs, personal hygiene, marriage, music and dancing. The audio recordings contain a recording of Dr. Cass in early 1980, dictating letters for her secretary. She discusses her health and her recent trip to Brazil with the International Society of Geographic Opthalmology. She has also recorded many of the Gwich'in stories and legends that were related to her by such individuals as Paul Bonnetplume (Aklavik), Annie McPherson (Fort McPherson), Peter Lord (Old Crow, Yukon), Lazarus Sittichinli, Peter Moses and Edward Snowshoe. Although many of the legends relate to medicine men, Dr. Cass also recounts stories about the Willow Man, the Ungrateful Indian, Sakeethuck the "Trickster," the Crow Who Lost His Beak, the Lazy Boy, three stories about Bushmen [Hare and Slavey Indians] and a two hour saga about two brothers as told to her by Edward Snowshoe.

Robert Bouchard

Records primarily consist of Robert Bouchard's client files; some of his personal business records are also included. The papers include legal actions for murder, rape, incest, divorce, maintenance, transfers of mining claims and various motor vehicle offenses. Each file appears to contain copies of related incoming and outgoing correspondence, including Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reports. There are also a number of transcripts of murder trials held in the Northwest Territories. The papers have been arranged into three series: client files; community files; and administration and miscellaneous files.

Records include photographs taken by Wilfred H. Kennedy who lived in the north in the late 1930s. He worked on the boats travelling the Mackenzie River before moving to Yellowknife, where he was employed at Con Mine. The photographs depict Eldorado Mines, Great Bear Lake and Con Mine, Yellowknife. There are images of miners and other residents of Yellowknife, including the members of the first hockey team in the community. There are also photographs of some of the first buildings in the community. In addition there is a letter from Alex C. Mosher, and a number of newspaper clippings dating from 1938 which were annotated by Alex Mosher.

Henri Posset

The first recording was made in September 1957. It consists of drumming and chanting taped in Jean Marie River and Fort Franklin, fiddle music from Fort Franklin and various Slavey legends related by Johnny Betseda of Fort Simpson and Jean Marie Punch of Fort Providence. The second recording, with John Tsetso, was made on April 1, 1964 in St. Margaret's Hospital at Fort Simpson. In this recording, Tsetso narrates, in Slavey, the first three chapters of his book, "Trapping is my Life," which was published in February 1964. He also relates two other stories about summer and winter. The accession also contains two letters written by Father Posset which provide some biographical information on Johnny Betseda, John Tsetso and Jean Marie Punch. There is also a typed transcript of an interview between Father Posset and William Nerysoo, Senior, relating to Gwich'in personal names which was conducted on November 23, 1987.

Tremain family

The textual records consists of a photocopy of a typed manuscript written by Gwendoline Tremain-Runyard between 1976-1988 and give a brief history of her family. The 71 black and white prints are mounted in a photo album and document the three Anglican Missions that Reverend W.S. Tremain worked at: Fort Norman, Fort Simpson, and Hay River. The images relate primarily to the mission buildings in each community, and the staff and pupils of St. Peter's Anglican Residential School at Hay River. Some photographs depict Anglican missionaries who visited these communities. There are images of the "S.S. Mackenzie River", and some of canoes, scows, mooseskin boats, and tugs that plied the Mackenzie River. There are also some images of Dene camps. The manuscript gives a brief history of her family. The 19 black and white copy negatives that were reproduced from two albums compiled by Lottie Tremain, during her stay in the Northwest Territories between 1914 and 1919. The negatives were created by the NWT Archives in 1989. They are copies of the pages of the original photo album forming part of this accession and copies of images from a second album.

Sanavisak Guild

Records include photographs that were in an album compiled by members of the Sanavisak Guild in Pine Point. The accession also contains the minutes of a meeting held on September 8, 1965 to discuss the formation of the guild; two guild newsletters, one from March 1982 and the other from 1983; and the programme for the guild's 10th Anniversary dinner and dance. The photographs document many of the activities of the Sanavisak Guild in Pine Point between 1969 and 1984. The majority of the images are well identified. Activities depicted include craft and bake sales, Christmas parties and floats decorated by the guild for the annual Pine Days parade and celebrations.

These recollections were compiled by Linda deBalinhard and Karen Carruthers. Topics covered include descriptions of: the trip to Hay River from Edmonton by scow; Hay River; fishing; huskies; school life; the arrival of the annual steamer and the Christmas season.

Records consist of two photo albums containing 146 black and white prints of Aklavik and environs and of Mary Saich's trip to Tuktoyaktuk; one scrapbook compiled by Mary Saich; one notebook including historical and geographical notes on the Northwest Territories and curriculum ideas; 145 black and white and colour slides. The photographs are of people in Aklavik and Tuktoyaktuk, images of barges and steamers, buildings such as the hospital, school, and church in Aklavik as well as winter and summer camps.

The records relate to Robert Janes’ archaeological field work at Fort Alexander, Willow Lake, Dealy Island (Kellett’s Storehouse), Drum Lake, and the Canol Camp, his interest in archaeology and anthropology, his work as the first Director of the Territorial Central Museum (later the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre or PWNHC), and his work as the Executive Director of the Science Institute of the Northwest Territories (SINT). The textual records include archaeological field notes and reports, papers and articles written and collected by Janes, including his thesis, book and article reviews, correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, PWNHC building planning and operation files, newsletters, newspaper clippings, EXPO’86 planning files, and PWNHC and SINT publications. The photographs, maps, and architectural drawings document archaeological excavations at Fort Alexander, Willow Lake, and Dealy Island (Kellett’s Storehouse) and show the building and operations at the PWNHC. One plan also shows preparations for the Northwest Territories pavilion at EXPO’86. The sound recording also relate to the ethnoarchaeological project at Willow Lake, including interviews and a recording of a church service.

The textual records relate to Robert Janes’ work as an archaeologist in the field at Fort Alexander (Willowlake River), Director of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC), and Executive Director of the Science Institute of the Northwest Territories. The records also include archaeological and anthropological articles, papers and reports that Janes collected and produced. The photographs show various aspects of Robert Janes’ career in the Northwest Territories. A large group of photographs depict the Fort Alexander excavation, showing site details and examples of archaeological artifacts. There is also a group of slides and photographs relating to the PWNHC, showing construction of exhibits and building interiors, the official opening with HRH Prince Charles, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau's visit in 1980, and early day to day activities at the Centre. Other photographs show Kellett's storehouse excavation (Dealy Island), the unveiling of the Sir John Ross plaque in Taloyoak (Spence Bay), and the research station at Iglulik (Igloolik).

Records include photographs depicting images of Fort Resolution, Great Bear Lake, Fort Rae, Yellowknife and the Negus Mine site. In addition there are photocopies of a standard employee's contract at Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd., dated 1934; a list of supplies required to sustain 2 men for 2 months; 2 plane tickets from Edmonton to Yellowknife dated 1936 and from Yellowknife to Edmonton dated 1937; and a 19-page diary written by Mr. Hagen during his trip to Bear Lake. There is also a copy of a release form in which Mr. Hagen released Admiral Yellowknife Mines, Ltd. Bear Exploration and Radium Ltd, Burwash Yellowknife Mines, Ltd. and Atlas Yellowknife Mines Ltd from his stakers interest in the group of claims in the Yellowknife area.

The textual records are comprised of copies of research, legal documents and reports related to Treaty 8, and is primarily concerned with taxation. The sound recording, entitled "The Winds of Change", was produced by CBC Calgary, most likely in the early-1970s. The documentary discussed the changes happening in the North. Northwest Territories' communities described in the piece included Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Yellowknife, Fort Smith, and Hay River.

The textual records relate to an Alberta court case, Benoit et.al. v. R, which concerned Treaty 8. It also includes the 1999 thesis dissertation of Marine Le Puloch entitled 'Le Traite no. 8 au Canada, beneficiaires et exclus'. The sound recordings are from two films. One is from the film 'Dene Nation', and is an original recording by Gerry Cheezie. The second sound recording is an original recording by Jim Balsillie created for the film 'I Was Born Here.' Rene Fumoleau was the director and/or producer of the film projects of the same names.

Records are comprised of 4 pages of typewritten text of the reminisces of Paul Vaudrack [Voudrach] of Fort Good Hope dated October 12, 1968. The original manuscript was handwritten; Father Rene Fumoleau OMI created the typed copy. The manuscript depicts Gwich'in life before the time of 'aid from government' in the first years of the twentieth century, including the construction of birchbark canoes, whaling, fishing, the outbreak of influenza, Father Giroux and the role of the Church, and the influence of the English language and residential schools.
