Part of Metis Nation of the Northwest Territories fonds

This item is the thirteenth part of a thirteen-part meeting or forum of the Metis Nation on land and resources, held in Hay River in March 1994. The meeting is in English. The original source item is side A of a 60 minute audio cassette. The meeting also includes items CN-149A, CN-149B, CN-150A, CN-150B, CN-151A, CN-151B, CN-152A, CN-152B, CN-153A, CN-153B, CN-154A, and CN-154B. The meeting appears to be co-chaired by Gary Bohnet and Pierre Simpson. The recording begins with the continuation of a presentation by Gary Bohnet (Metis Nation President) and George Kurszewski (Fort Smith) regarding the Political Accord signed by the Minister of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) and the Native Council of Canada (NCC) and the letter of intent from the Minister to the Metis Nation. Kurszewski reflects further on the change in government policy, refusing the comprehensive land claim in 1990, and waiting for a better deal. Questions and comments from the delegates are discussed including publicizing the significance of the Accord and Letter of Intent, next steps, how to ensure a community driven process, respecting treaty First Nations and the processes they are in, work to be done in the communities by the Locals. The discussion gradually shifts to meeting wrap-up, including thanks to the host community, the Executive, volunteers, and chefs, a closing prayer by Bernie Ouellette, and the Metis anthem ("Proud to be Metis").

Part of Metis Nation of the Northwest Territories fonds

This item is the fourth part of a five-part recording of a meeting of the Dene Land Claims Committee, including members from the Metis Association and the Indian Brotherhood (later Dene Nation) held May 18-19, 1976 in Fort Smith. This recording was made May 19, 1976. The meeting is in English. The original source item is side B of a 90 minute audio cassette. The meeting also includes CN-434A, CN-434B, CN-320A, and CN-319A. Two tapes seem to be missing from the recording. Participants include Richard Nerysoo, George Kurszewski, Francois Paulette, and Charlie Overvold. The recording continues with a continuation of the discussion on possible political structures. The committee discusses the relationship between community and national level (Grand Council) and possibly not having a regional level. They want the structure things in a way that will ensure that the chief executive of the Grand Council will be answerable to the Council, which will be made up of community leaders, and can be removed if necessary. Their goal is to be self-governing, with control over what happens in communities. The Committee also mentions the need to determine who is eligible to participate in the land claims. They acknowledge that there has already been long debates on this. The Committee turns to a discussion of deadlines. While one speaker suggests that the land claim should take as long as necessary, another states that while there is no land claim, the Federal Government will remain in control with the result that the people will lose more and more control. The November 1 deadline to submit a land claim proposal to the Federal Government is analyzed, with members speculating on the consequences of failing to meet it. The discussion then turns to the upcoming policy panel on land claims for the Berger Inquiry. Richard Nerysoo and Rick Hardy are tasked with preparing a paper for discussion at the next Dene Land Claims Committee meeting. Names of those presenting were also to be decided at that meeting. Finally, land claims funding is mentioned, along with guidelines for how it can be spent. The establishment of regional offices and the possibility of regional budgets is discussed. Charlie Overvold and Richard Nerysoo debate whether the funding ought to be used to fund a special Metis Association Assembly to settle the question of whether the Metis Association will continue or join with the Indian Brotherhood. The recording ends abruptly.

Part of Metis Nation of the Northwest Territories fonds

This item is the fifth part of a five-part recording of a joint Metis Association and Indian Brotherhood (later Dene Nation) meeting in Inuvik, recorded ca. January 1977. The recording is in English and Indigenous languages. The original source item is side B of a 60 minute audio cassette. The meeting also includes items CN-421A, CN-421B, CN-423A, and CN-423A. The purpose of the meeting is to determine if the Metis Association and Indian Brotherhood can work together and how they might work together. The meeting is chaired by Richard Blake. The recording continues with discussion. A female speaker indicates that attendees returning to communities can tell people what is really going on and what happened at the meeting. Another speaks on working together. A motion is proposed that the two organizations will meet together at least once a month at the community level and every three months at regional level or as important issues come up. There is some discussion on who should organize the meetings. It is suggested that each regional meeting should set the date for the next one. There is additional discussion before a break, but the poor audio quality makes it difficult to follow. Following the break, a speaker indicates that people can't depend on one person all of the time and that leaders need to have people pulling with them. There is a motion to get a written press release endorsed by the meeting's attendees about the meeting. Paul Andrew and Charlie Furlong are to be spokesmen, but how they are to be interviewed is debated. Another speaker reiterates the need to start working together in communities. Overall, the audio quality is extremely poor and it is difficult to hear.

This recording includes sides A and B of tape.
