The file consists of a draft briefing binder for transition to the 17th Legislative Assembly. The binder includes a fiscal scan, information on the public service, social policy issues, postsecondary education, training and the workforce, housing issues, mental health and addictions, health and social services system sustainability and reform, effective social responses to crime, French and Aboriginal language plans, economic growth strategy, energy, devolution, land issues, infrastructure issues, Inuvik/Tuktoyaktuk Highway, outstanding claims, aboriginal rights, and self-government implementation, relationship with the Federal Government, pan-Territorial/pan-Arctic agenda, and fiscal strategy.

1920's - 1930's [history of education]

One folder consisting of copies of correspondence regarding the availability of teaching positions in the NWT [1923]; a memorandum describing the education available in the NWT in 1939 and making recommendations for improvement; a research bulletin which discusses schools in the NWT and the Yukon prior to 1930 [1983]; and draft material for Norman Macpherson's book on the history of education in the NWT [1983].

1940's [Book of wisdom]

One folder consisting of photocopies of the title page, introduction, and table of contents of "The book of wisdom", a book prepared by the Department of Mines and Resources which was intended to educate the Inuit on topics such as disease prevention, the Family Allowance program, and the care of rifles and boats.

1950's [history of education]

One folder consisting chiefly of correspondence, meeting minutes, enrolment statistics, and photocopied excerpts from annual reports of the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources, all relating to education in the North. Includes a program from the official opening of the Fort Smith federal school and hostel in 1958 (later J. B. Tyrrell School and Breynat Hall). Most of the material dates to the 1950s, but the file also includes letters written in 1981-1982 regarding the residential school in Shingle Point by a teacher who worked there in 1929. Contains personal information.

1960's [history of education]

One folder consisting of correspondence regarding staffing, recommendations from a 1965 teachers' conference, and the language of instruction in Arctic schools; excerpts from conference proceedings discussing the interpretation of test results and the establishment of the Teacher Education Program; statistical summaries of school enrolment and staff numbers; an organizational chart of the Department of Education [1969]; a report on the education available for Inuit students; a press release announcing the naming of several schools in 1961; and notes on the history of Breynat Hall [ca. 1980-1984].

1970's [history of education]

One folder consisting of correspondence, lists of schools, information about the opening of Chief Jimmy Bruneau School in Rae-Edzo [Behchoko], a 1975 annual report of the Department of Education, copies of two academic articles which discuss problems with the education offered to Inuit children, a 1979 Department of Education newsletter, a speech about Northern education given at the Boreal Institute, a program for a conference of the Baffin Region Education Advisory Committee, recommendations for improving the education system in the NWT, and information about the administrative setup of the Department of Education.

1980's [education reports]

One folder consisting chiefly of reports relating to education in the NWT. Topics include the incorporation of Aboriginal culture in the classroom, problems at the Deninoo School in Fort Resolution, involvement of local authorities in education, financial assistance for students, and predictions for the future. Also includes statistical summaries of transfers in and out of Yellowknife School District No. 2 and of students attending university or vocational training in 1979 and correspondence regarding changes in teacher certification.

1994 Royal Visit

The file consists of records relating to arrangements for the August 1994 visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip to the Northwest Territories. The records include an information package, schedules, correspondence, press releases, seating plans, site diagrams, and planning committee lists.
