The collection is comprised of photographs that were deleted from the files up to early 1990. Themes include involvement of the Government of the Northwest Territories in housing, education and training, arts and crafts, tourism, transportation and industry. Also included are images documenting native land use, community activities, facilities, special events and people. Commissioners and the Council are particularly well documented, especially during the earlier period. Also extensively represented are Expo '86 and the Arctic Winter Games. Most were photographed by the Government Photographer, Audio Visual section, although some were purchased or acquired from other sources. Photographers include Mike Van Duffelen, Bob Wilson and Tessa Macintosh.

These records document the museums and heritage activity of the Government of the Northwest Territories. They provide evidence of the functions of the Northwest Territories Historical Advisory Board, the Northwest Territories Heritage Council, and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Included are documents from the Archaeological and Historic Sites program, Education and Extension program, Territorial Plaquing program, Exhibits program, Museum grants, NWT Archives, and Archaeological Permits. The records consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, policy, procedures, regulations and a few photographs that remain in the original files. Also included are files on various conferences such as the Canadian Conference on Historical Resources, the Northern Museums Conference, and Committees such as the Interdepartmental Committee on Archaeology, the Canada-NWT Consultative Committee on Parks and the Museum Advisory Committee.

Records consist of minutes, agendas and reports from the Public Records Committee; reports and policies related to access to records, conservation, assistance with oral history projects, and records management; and correspondence with heritage organizations in Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson, and Yellowknife. The accession includes some files which appear to have been created by the Records Management section of the Department of Government Services.

The records detail the regular and special meetings of the Council of the Northwest Territories from 1921 to 1951 (sessions 1 to 201). There are several parallel series containing minutes, agendas, and attachments, including reports, Orders in Council and Ordinances, correspondence, and occasionally photographs or maps, relating to the agenda items. products of meetings (Orders in Council, Ordinances) of the NWT Council. The first series contains the "official" set of files, including signed minutes for most meetings. Other record sets that cover some the same meetings, but may include different and more attachments, are found in the second and third series: Records of Council Members and Secretary's Files and Session Papers. The Records of Council Members series also includes records of the Advisory Board on Mining Regulations (1922-30). The last two series contain Ordinances and Orders in Council related to the Northwest Territories and associated indices.

Please note that many of the Council minutes contain outdated and pejorative terms; paternalistic, racist, ableist, or otherwise offensive attitudes; and/or discussions of sensitive topics. We have reproduced these terms and comments in the digitized documents because they are a part of the original historical record.

The accession consists of one copy of the NWT Art and Crafts Council broadsheet dated spring 1980. The newsletter outlines some of the activities taking place in the Northwest Territories, Canadian Crafts Council news and information on upcoming art displays in the south. English and Inuktitut languages.

The photographs include a colour photograph of the Northern Transportation Company vessel the "M.V. Kelly Hall" and a hand coloured black and white portrait of a couple. The settlement plans are from the communities of Yellowknife, Fort Smith, Aklavik, Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson, Wrigley, Fort Simpson, Hay River, Port Radium, Fort Resolution, Taltson River, Pine Point, Fort Liard, Tuktoyaktuk and Fort Providence. In addition, there are maps showing water routes of steamships and mining claims in the Yellowknife area. Most of the maps and plans were published by various federal departments, including the Department of the Interior, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, and Department of Mines and Resources.

This accession consists of one programme from the 6th annual Northern Games held in Fort McPherson in July of 1975.

Records consist of a letter from Nancy Lurie to Dr. Herman Viola; a letter to Nancy Lurie from Alphonse Eronchi, a copy of an exam question from 1968 related to the Dene of Yellowknife; and copies of several songs composed by Nancy Lurie.

The map was produced and sold by the Mundy Map Company of Edmonton. The map shows travel routes from Edmonton into the NWT up to Great Bear Lake and as far north as Kugluktuk. The map includes many place names and travel hints, including directions and distances between locations. It also shows air travel routes, RCMP stations, missions, hospitals, mining claims, wireless radio stations, gas caches and the boundaries of mining districts. It shows the position of claims at Echo Bay, Hunter Bay, Dismal Lake and the Camsell River and provides rough information on landmarks such as mountain ranges, the tree line, waterfalls and rapids.

Records consist of one unpublished paper "Indian Tribal Courts in the United States: A Model for Canada?" The paper is 66 pages long, and was produced for delivery at the Native Law Centre. It was written by B.W. Morse, a professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law in 1979.

This accession consists of a typed manuscript collected by Jean Morisset between the years 1974 and 1978. The manuscript represents the life story of Ted Trindell of Fort Simpson. The manuscript, entitled "Ni blanc - Ni Indien" (Neither White - Nor Indian) and compiled from letters, tapes and conversations was edited by Jean Morisset and Rose-Marie Pelletier and contains the words of Ted Trindell. This manuscript was later published in 1984 under the title "Ted Trindell: Metis Witness to the North".

Please note that the manuscript uses a derogatory term to refer to a person with mixed heritage and an outdated term to refer to Inuit. We have reproduced these terms in the digitized document because they are part of the original historical record.

This accession consists of one letter addressed to Sir Leopold McClintock from C. Irmingen dated 11 April 1861 discussing Irmingen's treatise on the currents and ice drifts on the coast of Ireland.

This accession consists of a bound scrapbook containing reproductions of materials relating to early British arctic expeditions and explorers, ca. 1850s. The book contains items such as: photographs of paintings of Horatio Austin, Henry Kellet, James Clark, and Lt. Hobson; copies of textual material on medical practices and diet; copies of correspondence from Commander McClintock to James Ross; a copy plan of the "H.M.S. Intrepid"; drawings of sledge flags from Austin and Kellett expeditions; and hand bills for entertainment events aboard ship. [Nicolas Cole McClintock (1916-2001) was the grandson of Admiral Sir Francis Leopold McClintock, K.C.B., D.C.L., L.L.D., F.R.S., V.P.R.G.S.]

The accession is 1 poem, handwritten on lined paper, titled "Spring". Poem was donated by Doug Leonard of the NWT Metis Association in March 1980, and was likely written the same year.

The images depict human impacts on the landscape, such as seismic lines, mine sites, and dams, as well as communities including Yellowknife, Rae (Behchoko), Fort Providence, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, Fort Norman (Tulita), and Inuvik. They were taken by Ken Taylor while he was working on a land use mapping project for Environment Canada.

Records include audio recordings that June Helm and her research associates - including Nancy O. Lurie, David M. Smith and George Tharp - made with a number of northern aboriginal people. The recordings are of Tlicho (Dogrib), Slavey and Chipewyan people, and include notable leaders such as Chief Jimmy Bruneau and Naedzo the Bear Lake Prophet. The recordings include stories, personal messages, songs, interviews and linguistic data. The recordings also include an interview of June Helm that was recorded and aired on CBC in 1965. The dates of the other recordings are 1955, 1962, 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1971. The 23 original master audio reels and 10 original master audio cassettes were reformatted to CD (24 bit SDII files) in 2002.

The textual records date primarily from 1967-1990 and relates to June Helm's work regarding the Indian Brotherhood, Caveat '73 and the Berger Commission or Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry, with some annotations dating from 1999. The records related to the Indian Brotherhood consists of material from the land use mapping project including documentation of trails, routes and animal resources. This project was undertaken by June Helm for the Indian Brotherhood. The Caveat '73 material consists of documents related to the Caveat filed by the Northwest Territories Chiefs on March 24, 1973. In addition, there are copies of June Helm's testimony at the Caveat hearings. The Berger Commission (Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry) material consists of newspaper clippings, press releases and transcripts of the hearings. The blueprints, maps and charts date from the 1960s. The two blueprints consist of versions, some with annotations, of a Synoptic Chart of Contact Events. These diagrams illustrate first contact between Aboriginal peoples and the Europeans, development of missions, highways, railways, significant government buildings and the impact of disease within the Northwest Territories, as well as other locations. The four annotated maps show the Camsell River, Marian River, Hardisty Lake and the Yellowknife and Rae (Behchokǫ̀) area. The remaining item is a hand-drawn chart.

The textual records consist of two certificates of membership in the Polar Bear Chapter, Order of Arctic Adventurers, for having flown a radio controlled model airplane across the Arctic Circle. The images depict a Commanche 250 model airplane, David Johnson, his wife Gladys and their dog Joc.

102 prints were housed in a photo album. Many of the images depict Day's 1938 trip by boat from Athabasca to Yellowknife. Other images show Yellowknife in the late 1930s, Negus and Cominco camps and construction crews at Prosperous Lake, mine sites and locations such as Fort Fitzgerald, Waterways and Fort Smith.

These images were put together for a slide show at the request of some teachers, whose Grade 6 & 7 students were studying the exploration and development of the North (See Finding Aid for slideshow narration). The photographs document various airplanes used in the north, aerial photographs including views of communities in the western arctic and people involved in the aviation industry in the north. The print, taken in 1962, is thought to be the last photograph of Henry Busse before he died.
