This fonds consists of approximately 70 cm of textual material, 3 maps and 211 photographs, produced or accumulated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from 1910 to 1980.

Many of the textual records are from the Arctic Red River detachment and date from 1925 to 1954. These include: patrol diaries (1927-1953, 1944-1948 missing); patrol reports (1926-1934); some annual reports (1927-1931); financial records (1926-1943); requisitions (1926-1954, with gaps); shipping invoices (1929-1933); ledgers; fur export tax receipts and returns (1929-1943); hunting and trapping permits and returns (1926-1943); game licenses (1926-1942); trading post permits (1929-1942); radio receiving license receipts and returns (1927-1953); crown timber returns (1926-1943); liquor permits (1929-1939); income tax returns (1929-1942); marriage licenses (1951-1953); vital statistics records (1926-1943); some hunting and trapping records pertaining to the Yukon (1929-1954); administrative records such as instructions of various kinds (192?-1950); correspondence (1926-1953); a file on the administration of estates (1926-1948); and two maps containing hunting and trapping information.

There is also a disc listing from 1969 related to the Inuvik region.

The photographs in this fonds cover a variety of subjects and locations, and were taken between 1910 to 1973. They include photographs of ceremonies and events: such as an RCMP centenary banquet held in Pine Point; an RCMP band tour; the dedication of a plaque on the Henry Larsen Building (RCMP detachment) in Yellowknife; Governor General George Vanier's 1961 tour in the Northwest Territories; and the search for, and burial of the members of the RCMP Dawson Patrol (the Lost Patrol).

Additional subjects depicted are the RCMP detachments and personnel across the north, Hudson's Bay Company buildings and employees, Anglican and Catholic missions, residents of the various communities across the Northwest Territories and the Flat River Patrol of the South Nahanni.

The map, (National Topographic System Sheet 106 M) of Fort McPherson, is annotated with the location where the Dawson Patrol died in 1911 and the location where Albert Johnson, the Mad Trapper, killed an RCMP constable.

This fonds consists of about 200,000 photographic negatives (mostly black and white with some colour) produced by the Native Press and its successors between 1971 and 1993 and contact sheets produced from the negatives.

The fonds also includes six C-60 audiocassette recordings containing samples of the Native Communications Society's (NCS) Indigenous language programming. In 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, NCS successfully applied to Community Programs for financial assistance to develop Indigenous language radio programming. Dene language lessons and elders telling stories and legends over CKNM radio were part of the radio programming.

Also included are 11 posters produced by NCS circa 1981-1982. One series of five posters is titled 'Our Elders Speak' and depicts traditional lifeways (hunting, fishing and attending a Dene feast), while a second series of posters features text and images that describe the history, objectives and functions of six Indigenous organizations in the NWT: NCS, NWT Metis Association, Dene Nation, NWT Native Women's Association, NWT Native Court Worker's Association, and the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre.

This fonds consists of approximately 1.6 meters of textual material from the Department of Public Works and Highways. The material from the Directorate Division includes files and records related to Commissioner's tours during the 1970s, departmental reorganization, departmental goals and objectives, capital assistance, lease and contracting policies, decentralization and privatization efforts and affirmative action policies. There are also reports from the regions and communities on Public Works projects, transfer of resposnibilities from Ottawa, transfer of responsibilites to hamlets, energy conservation projects, material related to the maintenance of public buildings such as schools, Dene and Metis land claim information, the Business Incentive Policy (BIP), the Capital Site Planning Committee, Senior Management Committee Minutes, Project Management seminars and material from conferences that took place across the Northwest Territories. The remaining material, generated by the Project Management Division, is dated between 1977-1986. Included in this material are correspondence, drawings, and specifications relating to the construction of the Northwest Territories Pavilion that was part of Expo '86.

This fonds consists of approximately 1.3 meters of textual material from the Department of Public Works. The material from the Policy and Planning Division includes material related to the departmental Establishment Policy and Northern Preference Policy. In addition, there are files related to ministerial tours of the communities, senior management meetings, Minister's speeches, energy policy, operations divisional meetings, annual reports to the Commissioner, devolution framework documents, and transfer of responsibility (i.e. health services) options. The bulk of the material is dated between 1975-1991 and consists of minutes and agendas from Director's Meetings, Manager's Meetings, Staff Meetings, Systems and Computer Services Review Meetings, Micro Computer Users Group Meetings, Priorities and Planning Committee reports, organization charts from the department and reports on petroleum products and the liquor commission.

This fonds consists of approximately 1.4 m of textual material and 7 photographs. The textual material is made up of 5 bound Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) journals and one carbon copy of a journal, Seasonal Log books for their steamships. The journals are from the following HBC posts: King William Land, September 24, 1932 to November 10, 1933; Fort Hearne, August 14, 1930 to March 31, 1933; Fort Hearne, March 7, 1934 to January 5, 1935; Tree River, June 1, 1925 to May 31, 1926; and King William Land, June 1, 1930 to November 29, 1931. The carbon copy journal is for King William Land, and covers the period September 12, 1925 to April 30, 1940, except for the period covered by the above bound journals of that post. The Tree River journal was recorded by A. A. Carroll and Ray Ross. The steamship logs are either Deck or Engine Room logs for the Distributor, the Great Bear, the Hearne Lake, the Hudson, and the Mackenzie River. The photographs are of the participants of a Hudson's Bay Fur Trade Conferences of 1931, 1933 and 1937 held in Winnipeg and a list of names paying tribute to Victor Ingraham.

This fonds consists of 24 black and white photographs, approximately 5 cm of textual material, one illustration and 2 handbills generated by the federal Department of Mines and Resources, dating from 1937 to 1950. The records include of a compilation of 18 reports, dated 1948 to 1950, on forestry and wildlife management in Wood Buffalo National Park and the southern and northern Mackenzie Districts. These reports focused on a variety of issues including: numbers and locations of forest fires; the transfer and introduction of various animal species such as beaver, elk and marten; fishing operations and fish levels; buffalo hunts; and the general status of forests and wildlife in these regions. The reports contain 24 black and white photographs and 1 drawing documenting the transfer of beaver and elk to Wood Buffalo Park. Other records include telegrams and correspondence concerning the construction of a landing strip at Wrigley in 1938 and 2 oversize cloth public notices. One warns of the dangers of forest fires; the text is in Dogrib and written in syllabics. The second identifies a native hunting and trapping preserve. An annotation on the front indicates that the Royal Canadian Mounted Policed (RCMP) schooner "St. Roch" may have located this notice in 1944. On the back there is an annotation: "Robert G. Fulton and Gerald Klondike Helicopters on Board M.V. Theta [1931?] Calgary Alberta." In addition, there is a RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) Bulletin entitled "A Brief Outline of the History, Customs and Laws Relating to the Indians and Eskimos of the Canadian Arctic and Sub-Arctic" which was produced by the Department of Mines and Resources and a pamphlet of general information about Yellowknife.

This fonds consists of approximately 15,538 photographs in various formats such as slides, prints and negatives, approximately 37 cm of text, 2 DAT audio cassettes, 25 audio reels, 6 films, 3 BetaCam videocassettes, 43 posters, 12 drawings and 2 maps. The photographic material dates between the late 1950s to 1995 and contains images of various communities and daily life of the Dene people of the North and South Slave regions. Eighteen photographs of Fort Good Hope collected by the donor likely date from the 1920s. By media type, there are roughly 10,700 colour slides, 1800 b/w negatives and 3000 colour negatives. The fonds also includes one colour print of Rene sitting on his snowmobile, which was later donated to the Collections section of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. The textual material consists of the unedited, penultimate draft of the manuscript for "As Long As This Land Shall Last: A History of Treaty 8 and Treaty 11, 1870-1939," which contains more detail than the published text. Also included are two transcripts of interviews conducted between Rene Fumoleau and Paul Vaudrack, a Gwich'in man. The first, a 25 page (3 mm) transcript of an interview conducted in French in 1955, concerns the Gwich'in equivalent of the Yamoria legend. The second, from October 1968 and typewritten in English, depicts Gwich'in life in the early-twentieth century. This manuscript discusses the influence of the English language, residential schools, and the outbreaks of influenza at that time. The bulk of the textual material are copies of court proceedings from the Benoit et.al. v. R. case of the late 1990s relating to Treaty 8 and a copy of the thesis dissertation by Marine Le Puloch entitled 'Le Traite no. 8 au Canada, beneficiaires et exclus' (1999), also relating to Treaty 8. There are 25 audio reels and 2 DAT audiocassettes that contain audio from "My Country, My People," "I Was Born Here" and "Dene Nation." In addition, the sound recordings contain music from "Our Land, Our Life," drum music from Fort Good Hope recorded in the 1957, Dene songs, Hareskin language and messages from the people of Fort Good Hope to friends and relatives in the hospital in Aklavik. There are 3 copies of the film entitled "Dene Nation" and 3 copies of the film "I Was Born Here", one of which is in French, entitled "Mon pays est ma vie". There are also 3 corresponding archival master BetaCam videocassettes for the films. The remaining material consists of 43 posters and 2 maps that date between 1977-1985. The posters relate to Native Rights, land claims, and Native Organizations such as the Dene Nation. There are also two maps entitled Canada's First People's and Centennial Map of the Northwest Territories. The fonds includes transcripts from eight interviews condcuted by Jane Kenny in 1984 with elders from Deline and documents related to the first two meetings of the Thebacha Association in 1967.

This fonds consists of 10 DAT audio cassettes, 24 audio cassettes and 2 cm of textual material. The original 24 audiocassettes were copied to DAT in December 1995; the DAT audiocassettes now constitute the archival masters. The recordings are of Dene elders and other residents of the Nahanni area. The textual material includes correspondence and some transcribed material from the project. People interviewed include Elsie Marcellais, George Matou, Charlie Yohin, Harry Tesou, Joe Koniseta, Ted Trindell, Laura Vital and Philip Howard.

The fonds consists of 343 photographs (b&w negatives) of various Northwest Territories communities and events, taken by Tom Alföldi during the summer of 1971. The images include ground views and aerial views of Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Hay River, Yellowknife, and Tsiigehtchic. There are also images of the Northern Games which were held in Inuvik, showing dancing, drumming, rat skinning, seal skinning, tea making, blanket toss, and spectators.

This fonds consists of 47 betacam videos and 5 cm of textual records. The videos contain two master copies of "I, Emile Petitot" and "Moi, Emile Petitot" as well as 45 tapes of raw footage. The text consists of transcripts of interviews for the films.

This fonds consists of 69 black and white photographs that were either taken, or collected, by Reverend T.J. Marsh between 1893 and 1907. There is also a photocopy of a monograph entitled "Historical Sketch of the Origin and Work of the Hay River Mission, Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories." Most of the images are stored in two photograph albums. The first album contains images taken by Reverend Marsh between 1893 and 1907. The second album contains photographs taken by C.W. Mathers, a professional photographer from Edmonton, who toured the Mackenzie River communities in 1901. There are also some loose images taken by Reverend Marsh. The images depict traditional Dene and Inuit lifestyles in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Subjects include mooseskin boats, scows, dog teams, skin tents and kayaks. Many of the images document the development of St. Peter's Anglican Mission at Hay River. There are photographs of the church, boarding school, mission staff and the students who attended the school. A number of images depict Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) posts and the steamers and scows that were used by the Hudson's Bay Company to transport goods in the north. Locations include Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson, Fort Norman, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Hay River and Peel River. The records have been arranged into three series: Series I - Reverend T.J. Marsh photograph album; Series II - C.W. Mathers album; Series III - Reverend T.J. Marsh.

This fonds consists of 597 col. slides. Slides feature Thomas Donnelly's travels throughout the Northwest Territories as a meteorologist. The communities highlighted in these slides include Yellowknife, Fort Smith, Inuvik, Fort Franklin (Délı̨nę), Lac La Martre (Whatı̀), Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, Colville Lake, Rae (Behchokǫ̨̀̀), Cambridge Bay, Coppermine (Kugluktuk), Holman (Ulukhaktok), Hay River, Artic Red River (Tsiigetchic), and Fort Reliance.

The content of the slides features Donnelly's travels throughout the north but heavily favours aerial views of the Mackenzie River and surrounding communities, weather stations, airports, air and float planes, churches and significant events such as the construction of the Dempster Highway and the visit of Governor General Michener to the community of Holman (Ulukhaktok).

This fonds contains photographs of a variety of northern communities, landmarks, activities and wildlife encountered by Terry Lines during his career as Game Officer and Superintendent of Fish and Wildlife between 1966 -1976. All photographs are colour, the mastercopies are slides.

The fonds consists of 42.6 cm of textual records and 4 maps created and used by Koenen's Air Service while operating a charter air service in Yellowknife, primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. The fonds also includes some personal records of owner Henry Koenen, including records of flying experiences with other companies in the 1930s and 1940s. The records include log books, correspondence, bills of sale, contracts and agreements, inspection forms, insurance information, payroll information, accident statements, Pilots' Flying Histories, invoices and receipts, an account ledger, income tax and financial statements, Air Transport Board reports, a promotional pamphlet, and maps showing areas flown to often.

This fonds consists of 1 cm of textual material comprised of one report prepared for the Northern Canada Power Commission in 1984 entitled "A Natural Boundary to Divide the Northwest Territories" and a copy of "NicPic News". The report examined a number of issues concerning the division of the Northwest Territories including: topography, natural resources and patterns of traditional use. "Nicpic News", the official newspaper of the Northern Canada Power Commission, is dated 1971, and reports on activities, programmes and staff happenings in the Northern Canada Power Commission.

This fonds consists of 374 images comprised of 167 colour slides, 115 colour photograph prints, 5 colour negatives (duplicates corresponding to 5 of the 115 prints in N-2009-006) and 87 b&w negatives. The photographs, taken by Foster, document several NWT communities in the 1970s and 80s, including Snare Lake (Wekweti), Holman, Fort Smith and Lac La Marte (Whati). There are also photographs from what is now Nunavut, including Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Lake Harbour (Kimmirut), and an outpost camp just outside Lake Harbour (Kimmirut). There are are 106 print photographs that document changes in Yellowknife's downtown core from 1978 - 2001. There are also several photographs from the Beaufort Sea which were taken while Foster was evaluating the impact of off-shore drilling on the nearby communities. Also included are nine colour photographs of the Lupin and Polaris mines at Resolute Bay, taken in 1980. Overall themes include mining, firefighting and fires, oil and gas exploration, community life, housing, fishing, aerial shots of communities, recovery of a float plane from Back Bay, the 1988 Yellowknife air show, tundra and foliage, and the 1972 solar eclipse in Rankin Inlet.

This fonds consists of 368 colour slides taken by Dr. Hunt between 1948 and 1956. The images were taken in the communities he visited in his capacity as a dentist. Communities depicted include Aklavik, Fort Rae, Fort Resolution, Fort McPherson, Fort Simpson, Tuktoyaktuk, Wrigley, Fort Smith, Coppermine and Old Crow. The images depict residents and buildings in these communities. Buildings depicted include Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachments, Hudson's Bay Company posts, Anglican Churches and Roman Catholic Churches. The fonds also includes images of Gwich'in, Dogrib, Inuvialuit, and Slavey peoples. There are some images of Inuvialuit dancers and drummers. A number of images were taken in Dr. Hunt's dental office and include close-ups of his dental equipment. There are also a number of images of reindeer herding and reindeer corrals in the Mackenzie Delta, and a buffalo hunt in Wood Buffalo National Park.

This fonds consists of 117 black and white copy negatives, 5 videocassettes in Umatic and Betacam format, 1 audio reel, 1 DAT audiocassette, 1 film reel, 1 blueprint and 1 folder of textual material. The fonds includes a variety of material relating to Sven Johansson's time in the north. These records include: a Umatic videocassette copy of Johansson's film entitled "Canadian Reindeer Project" and an audio reel containing narration for the film. The original audiocassette was copied to audio reel circa 1997. The audio reel is now the archival master. The 117 photographs show hunting and trapping activities and Johansson's boat the "North Star." In addition, there are 3 3/4" Umatic videocassettes documenting the Geological Survey of Canada charter of Johansson's boat the "North Star" in 1972 and one DAT audiocassette containing the narration for the videos. The textual material is made up of a manuscript for the choreography for the dance "Hunger," one photocopy of the typed manuscript "Canadian Reindeer Herd," both written by Johansson, as well as a copy of the Bill of Sale and Certificate of Record blueprint for the boat the "North Star." There is also a 16 mm black and white film entitled "Drum Dance" and a Betacam SP copy of "Drum Dance."

This fonds consists of 12 cm of textual material which includes: a set of Interdepartmental Reindeer Committee minutes (1932-1941); an index for these minutes; a journal probably kept by Peter Kaglik at the reindeer experimental station at Aklavik (1938-1944); some miscellaneous financial records from an experimental station (1943-1944); a permit to enter the Kittigazuit Reindeer Grazing Reserve (1950); a variety of reindeer bulletins issued by federal departments (1931-1956); and a chronological history of activities concerning reindeer.

The sound recordings are of community language workshops and public hearings held in a variety of communities including Yellowknife, Rae Lakes, Fort Rae, Fort Resolution, Lutselk'e (Snowdrift), Inuvik, Fort Smith, Deline (Fort Franklin) and Cambridge Bay. The textual material consists of approximately 5 cm of text in the form of transcripts from the workshop and community hearings.
