Records are comprised of a booklet produced by the department explaining Project Surname. The booklet was authored by Abe Okpik, the Project Director, with an introduction by Commissioner Stuart Hodgson. Three copies of the booklet are available, one in English, one in syllabics and one in Roman orthography Inuktitut.
Records are comprised of nine volumes of transcripts from the Supreme Court documenting the proceedings of an application by Chief Francois Paulette, who lodged a caveat with the Registrar of Land Titles, Northwest Territories in 1973. The volumes consist of Books One through Four (inclusive) and Books Nine through Thirteen (missing Books 5-8).

They provide evidence of the functions of the Northwest Territories Historical Advisory Board, the Northwest Territories Heritage Council, and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Included are documents from the Archaeological and Historic Sites program, Education and Extension program, Territorial Plaquing program, Exhibits program, Museum grants, NWT Archives, and Archaeological Permits. The textual records primarily consist of game and wildlife officer reports as well as reports and correspondence of various regional projects and programs. The textual records also consist of reports and correspondence related to the administration of organized hunts, fishing licenses, and land use permits in the Fort Smith Region, in addition to proposals for regional department reorganization, policies and procedures, and game surveys. The cartographic records consist of maps that have been annotated by various Fort Smith Region trappers.
