At Mile 678, we approach the Mackenzie River Ramparts ["The Ramparts"], a narrow channel between steep limestone cliffs. The current here is very fast, the river pouring its whole volume through a gorge scarcely 400 yards wide. The Indians [Dene] say at this point the Mackenzie, tired of lying on its back, turns on its side. Taken by Denny Ranson, [July or August 1964].
