[Stone] chimney and ruins of winter camp built by Admiral Sir George Back, who accompanied Sir John Franklin on [one of] his arctic expedition[s]. In 1833-35, Back led an expedition through northern Canada to the Arctic Ocean to ascertain the fate of Sir John Ross. In one of his letters, Back notes "We reached Great Slave Lake on August 7, 1833. We chose a site for winter quarters at the eastern extremity of the lake and started building the fort. I have called it Fort Reliance". Historic site is a few miles by boat from the present Fort Reliance, NWT. [Man takes picture of chimney.] Taken by Ted Grant, 1967.
