Member of Council correspondence

This series consists of invitations, itineraries, personal notes and articles written by Stuart Hodgson as a member of the NWT Council. Series also includes requests for advice from then Commissioner, B. Sivertz, regarding legislation.

Deputy Commissioner's correspondence

This series consists of correspondence during the period when Stuart Hodgson served as Deputy Commissioner from August 1965 until his appointment as Commissioner in 1967. The series contains Deputy Commissioner chronos, correspondence with Northern Administration Branch, the NWT Council and Stuart Hodgson's council notes, Northern Conference minutes and notes, and correspondence with Regional Administrators and several others.

Commissioner's Correspondence

This series consists of approximately 8.9 metres of textual records. The correspondence includes the full chronos of Stuart Hodgson's tenure as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. There are also specific chronos files for Commissioner Hodgson's correspondence with the Minister and Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (later Indian and Northern Affairs). There are also separate files for correspondence with the Governor General, Privy Council, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the Deputy Commissioner, Council Members and many other individuals related to the Northwest Territories. The series also includes correspondence regarding the move to and establishment of government in the Northwest Terrtories. There are also several files of personal correspondence from Stuart Hodgson's tenure as Co-Chair of the the International Joint Commission, and during his time as chairman of the board with the BC Ferries Corporation.

Executive Committee Meetings

The series consists of agendas, meeting minutes and policy and procedure documents, providing subject summaries, recommended actions and discussion points for the Executive.

Addresses

This series consists of addresses given and collected by Stuart Hodgson. The majority of addresses are from his time as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, addressing the members of the Legislative Assembly and the public of the Northwest Territories. There are also a series of updates entitled Tuesday Letters, that both he and his predecessor B.G. Sivertz wrote for the NWT Council (predecessor of the Legislative Assembly). There are also addresses from his time as Co-Chair of the International Joint Commission.

Diaries

This series consists of diaries and day timers kept by Stuart Hodgson. The vast majority of the pages are blank but many of the day timers from his tenure as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories have notes and appointments.

Commissioner and Legislative Balls

This series consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, guest lists, RSVP and invitation cards, menus and other ephemera related to the Commissioner's and Legislative Balls during part of Stuart Hodgson's tenure as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.

Royal Tours

This series consists of correspondence with the Royal Family's staff and coordinating tours and trips for members of the Royal Family, most notably the 1970 visit of Queen Elizabeth II.

Commissioner's Tours

This series consists of compiled briefing books, tour books (summaries) as well as notes taken by Stuart Hodgson during his tenure as both Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.

Issue and Interest Files

This series consists of interest and issue files collected by Stuart Hodgson during his tenure as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, as well as a few from later in his life. Topics include the Carrothers Commission report, government structure and province-like responsibilities, Task Force on Personnel Policy and Management, division of the Northwest Territories, COPE (Committee for Original Peoples Entitlement), Aboriginal land claims, the Berger Inquiry, Travel Arctic, Arctic Winter Games, 1970 Centennial reports, diplomat and dignitary visits, Mace Coffey's "Territorial Review Study," constitutional development, the Territorial Government Reorganization, and later decentralisation of the Territorial Government, the Fort Smith Medical Situation, the Game Management Inquiry, the CBC production of "The Fourth World", and the Senator Laing Assignment, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples -- both Stuart Hodgson's feedback and B.G. Sivertz's research, files on the construction and collection of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, the expeditions known as the Franklin Probe to search for Franklin's lost ships, ANIK satellites, as well as travel documents of Stuart Hodgson's travel to Vancouver, Edmonton, Bathurst Lodge, Greenland, Le Havre, Soviet Union and a European tour in 1978. It also includes meeting notes of the True North Living History Society symposium where Stuart was invited to participate in 2002.

Awards

This series consists of both Stuart Hodgson's appointments to Council, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, as well as his Order of Canada, honorary doctorate with the University of Calgary, and Order of St. John's Ambulance, St. Huberts and St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.

Tenth Anniversary of the Territorial Government

The series consists of invitations, seating plan and guest lists to the 10th Anniversary Ball, Stuart Hodgson's speech for the occasion, a dinner invitation to honour employees for 10 years of service, and correspondence from dignitaries including from Balmoral Castle, and from the Prime Minister regarding the publication "A Decade of Progress".

Farewell to Northwest Territories

This series consists of correspondence regarding Stuart Hodgson's stepping down as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories and leaving the north, including a letter of thanks from John Parker, who would become Commissioner after Stuart.

International Joint Commission

This series consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, rules of procedure, notes and resignation letter of Stuart Hodgson's tenure as co-chair of the International Joint Commission.

Retirement

This series consists of materials regarding Stuart Hodgson's retirement dinner, when he stepped down as CEO of the BC Ferries Corporation.

Autobiography

This series consists of various resumes and lists of accomplishments by Stuart Hodgson, as well as an unfinished manuscript for an autobiography that details his life from birth until the early days of being Commissioner of the Northwest Territories and bringing the seat of government to Yellowknife. The series also includes 30 microcassette and 1 audio cassette recordings of Stuart Hodgson recounting on significant events throughout his career. Accompanying the cassettes are copies of correspondence compiled by Stuart Hodgson in 1994, to provide evidence and documentation of rationale and decisions he made as Commissioner. Correspondence is annotated with references, and additional contextual notes have been provided by Stuart Hodgson.

Mementos

This series consists of greeting cards, menus and invitations from various gala events and correspondence collected by Stuart Hodgson, mostly during his tenure as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, but up to and after his retirement in 1992. There are also Cross Border, Arctic Circle certificates, a Sourdough Council certificate from the Yukon, and an information booklet on Cambridge Bay.
