This accession consists of a video made by the Parks and Visitor Services division of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, entitled "The Thelon & The Kazan - Canoeing Canada's Heritage Rivers". The video is a documentary introduction to paddling the Thelon River and the Kazan River.

The images were taken at Fort McPherson, Fort Smith and Fort Franklin. Featured in the photographs are elders, traditional games and activities. They are not identified beyond geographic location. There are also images of the Perry Expedition and what appear to be Department of Interior - Yukon and Northwest Territories Branch photographs. In addition, there are images from throughout the arctic, with the majority appearing to be of the Keewatin Region.

The sound recordings consist of seven scripts of Christmas stories from the Northwest Territories and Nunavut researched and written by Erica Tesar (PWNHC) and produced by the Department of Information with technical production by Pat Monahan of the Native Communications Society. Performers included Bob MacQuarrie, Clive Tesar, Barbara Dillon, Val LeBlanc, Candice [Candace] Savage, Cathy MacQuarrie, Pat Monahan, Fred Norwegian, Margaret Mackenzie, Leonie Kannuk, and the Gumboots. The stories include dramatizations of New Year's 1799-1800 at Fort Chipewyan, a 1917 RNWMP patrol on the barrenlands, Christmas 1821 and 1822 on the ships Fury and Hecla, Christmas 1872 on an ice floe during the Polaris expedition, Dene Christmas celebrations, the opening of Kativik Community Hall in Iqaluit in 1974,Inuit Christmas celebrations, and Christmas in Yellowknife 1938.

Records include material related to ministerial tours of the communities, senior managers meetings, operations divisional meetings, annual reports to the commissioner, devolution framework documents, and transfer of responsibility (i.e. health services) options.

This accession consists of a negative and two photographs showing the plaque erected in July 1978, near Little Dal Lake. The plaque is for Mt. L.G. Kraft, dedicated to Lawrence Gerald Kraft, a guide for Chuck Hayward. Lawrence Kraft drowned while crossing the North Redstone River (Moose Horn River). Mr. Hayward and the parents of Lawrence Kraft appear in the photographs.

Records include one photocopy of Frank Russell's journal dated from April 26, 1893 to August 18, 1894. The journal documents Russell's trip from Edmonton to Lake Athabasca, and along the Mackenzie River to Fort Good Hope. In addition, it covers a trip between Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake, and along the Coppermine River. The journal also contains a limited vocabulary list for the Dogrib (Tlicho), Loucheux (Gwich'in) and Yellowknives Dene. Requests for copies should be directed to the Smithsonian Institute.

This accession consists of W.D. Addison's collection of material related to the Nahanni area, including his own photographs, trip journals, and maps, the annotated bibliography and literature review he compiled, oral-history interviews he conducted, transcripts and catalogues he compiled and edited, photographs, documents, and maps he gathered from various sources, and correspondence he conducted with Nahanni old-timers and others.

Subjects include the Mackenzie River, Slave River, Great Slave Lake, Keewatin and Ungava.

The textual material comprises an incomplete copy of L.T. Burwash's report entitled, "The Eskimo, Their Country and Its Resources: Economic Survey of the East Coasts of Hudson Bay and James Bay from Richmond Gulf to Rupert House, Including the Belcher and Other Adjacent Islands," Ottawa, Dept. of the Interior, 1927. (Typewritten.) The report contains a diary of the trip taken by Burwash, descriptions of Inuit life, food supplies, clothing, health, the influence of trading posts, housing conditions, and mineral and animal resources in the region. Much of the report focuses on the Inuit in the regions around Little Whale River and the Belcher Islands. Included in this report were photographs of communities along the eastern coast of Hudson Bay and James Bay and eight maps. The mounting of the photographs in this report suggests that this copy was a draft produced before its final publication.

Records are comprised of two bound, unpublished manuscripts typed by Catherine Hoare entitled Adventures Unlimited. The manuscipt, authored in 1964, details the time that Mrs. Hoare and her husband William Hoare spent in northern communities including Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, Coppermine (Kugluktuk), Fort Reliance, Baker Lake, and Herschel Island between 1914-1931. The manuscript appears to be a transcript of journals kept by William and Catherine Hoare woven together with Mrs. Hoare's explanatory narrative. It details the travels and experiences of the family but also contains recolllections of historical events, including a version of the murder of Harry Radford and George Street.

Records are comprised of a handwritten account of two prospecting trips taken in the 1940s by Lorne Bishop. It also includes a hand drawn map of the area from Great Slave Lake to Great Bear Lake.

The textual records include a diary and a notebook written by John Paterson, a letter from Jack Stark to John Paterson and a pamphlet of the Northern Transit Service. The diary recounts Mr. Paterson's time as a trapper and fur trader in the Snowdrift (Lutselk'e) area from the fall of 1924 to the summer of 1925. The notebook describes Mr. Paterson's arrival in Canada and how he came to be in the North.

The map appears to be one half of a larger map. It depicts northern Alberta, northern British Columbia and a portion of the western section of the Northwest Territories extending to the Arctic ocean (53 - 70 north and 103 - 128 west). Features included on the map are Great Slave Lake, Great Bear Lake a portion of the Mackenzie River and the Coronation gulf. A number of rivers, lakes, mountains, various other geographical features and communities including older communities such as Old Fort Providence, Old Fort Confidence, Old Fort Franklin, Old Fort Enterprise, Old Fort Reliance and Fort Anderson are identified on the map. Certain routes and trails such as winter portages and the routes of Hearne and Franklin are also depicted.

Records consist of two cairn notes taken from cairn at Cape Felix. One note was dated August 10, 1967 and was probably left by a member of Project Franklin and only a few words are legible. The second note was dated 1971 and one of the signatures on it is "R.S. Pilot of Fort Smith."

This accession consists of one map titled "Discoveries of the Expedition under the Command of Captain Franklin, R.N.: near the mouth of the Mackenzie River and on the Sea Coast East & West," compiled by E. N. Kendall. It was published in John Franklin's, "Narrative of a Second Expedition to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1835, 1826 and 1927".

The text and approximately half of the images were kept as a scrapbook recounting travels with Commissioner Stuart Hodgson, and life in Yellowknife as written by Mary Ellen Davies. The remaining images document the same time period and events, but were not included in the scrapbook.
