Records relate to the Yellowknife Public Library's Oral History Project dating from 1984-1985. The cassette tapes contain recorded interviews with prominent Yellowknife residents who were pioneers in their endeavours. Many of the interviewees and their families arrived in Yellowknife as the community began in the late 1930s and 1940s. Interviewees include Barb Bromley, Mary Hunter, Archie Loutitt, Arnold Smith, Helen Parker, Jean Piro, Joyce McLeod, Donald Sian, Michael Ballantyne, Harold Glick, Rene Fumoleau, Jan Stirling, Gerry Hordal, and Mary Forrest. The folder of text contains a master working list of prospective interviewees, 'local history files' or personal profiles of most participants, as well as general documents relating to the methodology for creating oral histories. The three colour prints are of former Yellowknife mayor and territorial MLA Mike Ballantyne.

The audiocassettes contain recordings of a community language workshop as well as public hearings held in a variety of communities, such as Yellowknife, Rae Lakes, Fort Rae, Fort Resolution, Snowdrift (Lutselk'e), Inuvik, Fort Smith and Fort Franklin (Deline). The textual records consist of transcripts from the workshop and community hearings.

The textual material consists of bound minutes from Pine Point Council Meetings held between 1969-1986, as well as financial statements from the community of Pine Point. The audiocassettes are recordings from an Economic Development Conference held in 1979 that featured speakers such as John Todd, Bertha Allen and Stuart Hodgson. In addition, eight of the audiocassettes contain recordings of the Pine Point Council Meetings from 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987. One meeting from each year was retained as a sample.

The audiocassettes and audio reels were copied to DAT cassettes in January 1996. The DAT cassettes now constitute the archival master and the audio reels and cassettes are being retained as original masters. This material represents a collection of oral histories and photographs accumulated by the Fort Good Hope Community Council via their Dene Language and Historical Research Project. The oral histories were created directly because of the Dene Language and Historical Research Program. The photographs, collected from individual photographers, represent an artificial collection of historical photographs. Photographers include Mr. Cassien Edgi and Brother Mahe, as well as several other community members.

Records include an interview conducted in 1973 by John Davids with H. (Bertie) Hollick-Kenyon. Mr. Hollick-Kenyon was a pilot and during the interview discussed a variety of planes that he piloted and some of his flying experiences in western Canada and the north. Mr. Hollick-Kenyon was also involved in the MacAlpine Search.

Records include three videos about the Geological Survey of Canada charter of Johansson's boat the "North Star" in 1972, a sound recording of the narration for the videos, a manuscript of the choreography for the dance "Hunger," and one photocopy of the typed manuscript "Canadian Reindeer Herd," both by Johansson. The original audiocassette was copied to a DAT audiocassette in 1997.

The records date from 1936 to 1990 and have been divided into four series: textual, photographs, moving images and sound recordings. The textual records, which date from 1961 to 1990, were divided into 8 sub-series: Minutes of Meetings (1972-1990), Reports (1961-1989), Newsletters (1966-1990), Regional Administration Files (1966-1982), Alphabetical File System (1965-1981), Northwest Territories Council Executive Correspondence (1967-1978), Northwest Territories Council Programme Files (1967-1989), Chronological Correspondence Files (1966-1984). The records in this accession document the development of the guiding movement in the Northwest Territories. There is information on the transfer of the Northwest Territories guiding movement from the control of the Alberta and Quebec Councils, to the formation of the Yukon and Northwest Territories Council in 1964. The creation of two separate councils in 1975, the Yukon Council and the Northwest Territories Council is also documented. The files document the relationship between the Northwest Territories Council that is based in Yellowknife and the Local Associations throughout the Northwest Territories. The records also document the relationship between the Northwest Territories Council and Girl Guides of Canada headquarters in Ottawa. There is also some information on the development of guiding programmes that were designed to reflect the unique nature of guiding in the north. The photographs, which were scattered throughout the collection in community file folders and miscellaneous envelopes, document brownie and guide meetings, enrollment ceremonies, trips to national and international guiding events, guide camps in the Northwest Territories, Annual General Meetings of the Northwest Territories Council and training sessions for guide and brownie leaders. There are also a number of images of special events such as the 65th and 70th Anniversary Celebrations of the Girl Guides of Canada. The film reels were taken in 1971 during a Girl Guide trip to Ottawa. The audio recordings document the activities of guide and brownie packs, a training session and campfire for leaders, and also include an Inuktitut version of the Brownie law, promise and story. The sound recordings were produced at Pangnirtung, Fort McPherson, Broughton Island, Coppermine, Cape Dorset and Yellowknife.
Subjects depicted in this accession include guiding programmes and activities in the north, plans to improve the delivery of guiding programmes in the north, trips to both territorial, national and international camps, training programmes for guide leaders, and special projects undertaken by the Northwest Territories Council. The records were created by the Yukon and Northwest Territories Council, the Northwest Territories Council, and Local Girl Guide Associations throughout the Northwest Territories, which were affiliated to these two councils.

The textual records consist of financial statements for 1977, 1980, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991, as well as correspondence from 1975 to 1990. One file has the meetings and conventions of 1979, 1980 and 1981; another has campaign literatures for Gerry Weaver, Peter Kusugak, Wally Firth, and Wayne Cahill. The audiocassettes contain recordings of the nomination meeting held on June 25, 1988. Speakers include Audrey MacLachlin, Fernand Denault, Jody Whyte, Dennis Bevington, Wayne Cahill and Gerry Weaver.

Records are comprised of the final report on the Qikiqtaruk (Herschel Island) Cultural Study, and English and Inuvialuktun transcriptions and translations of the interviews. There is also an alphabetical subject/name index for the interviews conducted in 1990 and those conducted in the 1991 Yukon North Slope Cultural Resources Survey. In addition, there are duplicate sound recordings consisting of 35 audiocassettes and tape summaries of the 35 interviews. The Inuvialuit elders interviewed were: Ishmael Alunik, Renie Arey, Jane Esau, Alex Gordon, Hope Gordon, Persis Gruben, Kathleen Hansen, Fred Inglangasuk, Lucy Inglangasuk, Bella Jacobsen, Jimmy Jacobsen, Dora Malegana, Joe Nasogaluak, Sarah Meyook, Albert Oliver, Jean Tardiff, Peter Thrasher and Agnes Gruben White. A short biography of each of these people is contained in the final report. The interviews were conducted at Aklavik, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and Herschel Island. Subjects include fishing, hunting, whaling, spiritual beliefs, clothing, methods of transportation, dances, food preparation, traditional healing, houses, and place names. There is also genealogical information on the Inuvialuit who lived on Herschel Island.

The material is dated from 1977-1995 and relates to the administration and functions of the Northwest Territories Council for Disabled Persons. The textual records, dating from 1977-1991, include monthly reports of the Executive Director, President, and various committees within the Council; minutes; records of clients throughout the Northwest Territories; the Ability column; and files from special projects and functions such as the Celebrity Auction, Bike-A-Thon, Handi-van, workshops and conferences. Some files relate to the Inuvik Council for the Disabled, and the communities of Pine Point and Hay River. The photographs date between 1986-1995 and contain images of: Kids on the Block (KOB) puppet performance tours by Barb Barnet and Barb Bond to Gjoa Haven, Cambridge Bay, and Coppermine; Celebrity Auction; National Access Awareness Week (NAAW) events; Bike-a-thons; posters; the Council's museum display for the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP); Run For Light (1986); conferences; and Rick Hansen's visit to Yellowknife. The sound cassettes, 1986-1991, feature recordings from conferences, an aldermanic candidates forum, and speakers on topics such as respite care, services in the north, advocacy and independent living centres, and accessibility. A few of the recordings are in Inuktitut. The accession also contains one 8 mm video tape of approximately 11 minutes of Kids on the Block puppet performances, and one poster published by the Northwest Territories Council for the Disabled for the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981).
