Records include recordings of meetings held between Commissioner Stuart M. Hodgson, Chief Alex Arrowmaker, and Members of the Legislative Assembly, Thomas H. Butters and R. Whitford concerning the development plans for Snare Lakes.

The collection consists of sound recordings of interviews conducted by Marc Stevenson, transcripts of interviews, and copies of historic photographs depicting Inuit and the Baffin region collected from the Public Archives of Canada. The sound recordings include: an interview in August 1983 with Etoangat at Kekerten whaling station; interviews conducted by Marc Stevenson at Kekerten and Pangnirtung in August 1984; and one apparently unrelated recording of an interview with an Inuk elder. The transcripts appear to be copies of twelve interviews conducted by Jaypeetee Akpalialuk in March 1984. The people of these interviews include: Kunugsiq Nuvaqiq, Shaimaiyuk Simon, Annie Alivatuk, Koagak Akulukjuk, Towkie Maniapik, Malaiya Akulukjuk, Martha Kakee, Sowdloo Shukulak, Etoangat Aksayook, Katchoo Evik, Koodloo Pitsulak, and Nowyook Nickutimusie.

This accession consists of materials produced in an attempt to document an old Catholic Mission building in Fort Resolution. The building was constructed in 1905 and demolished in 1987, and was primarily used as a residence for priests and brothers. Prior to its destruction, staff from the NWT Archives along with an architect visited Fort Resolution and conducted an initial survey of the building. In the following months Gail Beaulieu interviewed Father Louis Menez and Violet Beaulieu about the history of the building. Records in this accession include sound recordings and transcripts of the two interviews; architectural drawings of the basement, main, second, and third floors of the building, based on measurements taken during the survey; and a photograph of the mission building.

The sound recordings contain interviews conducted with Sven Johansson in March 1987 and March 1988. Included among this material is: (:0001) one reel to reel recording of the March 1987 interview, (:0002) one reel to reel recording of the March 1988 interview, and typed transcripts of the March 1987 interview. Mr. Johansson managed the reindeer herd in the western arctic from 1963-1968 and subsequently worked as a trapper until 1973.

The audio recordings are of papers presented as part of a USSR/Canada scientific exchange in 1987.

Records document the series, "Behind Closed Doors - A Series on Spousal Assault in the Northwest Territories." In addition, there are transcripts of the series.

Records consist of materials collected as resource information for the project entitled "Two Faces of a Northern Neighbourhood: An Historical Evaluation of the Willow Flats - Woodyard" (1985) The material includes a photocopy of an historical assessment of the Woodyard. The 3 plans of the Woodyard area are dated 1946 and 1985. The DAT audio cassette contains interviews with former residents, June Magrum, John Larson and Mary Frost. In addition, there are data sheets and summaries of the interviews.

Records consist of an agenda and list of registered participants for a three day conference entitled "Fish, Fur and Game for the Future," held in February 1981. The recordings also document the conference proceedings. The conference was sponsored by the Science Advisory Board, Department of Renewable Resources.

The CDs contain a recording of an interview with Henry G. Cook, conducted by David Leonard, Archivist, Northwest Territories Archives. The interview, recorded in 1979, details Mr. Cook's life and experiences in the north. The audio reel was copied to DAT in February 1996.

The DAT contains the recording of a lecture given by Mary Firth and Francois Paulette. Francois Paulette, a hunter and trapper from Fort Smith and Chief of the Fort Smith Dene Band, spoke on "Dene Culture and Spirituality." Mary Firth spoke on her life experiences and those of her parents.

The sound recordings consisted of lectures delivered as part of the "Science History and All That" lecture series. :0001 - In December 1979, George Calef, part of the Government of the Northwest Territories Game Branch lectured on the topic of caribou. :0002 - In February 1980, Dr. Walter O. Kupsh spoke on the topic of "Discovery and Mining of Uranium." Dr. Kupsh, a member of the Carruthers Commission from 1965-1966, also served as a member of the Science Advisory Board. :0003 - In September 1980, Constable M.J. (Joe) Olsen lectured on the topic of the "St. Roch." Joe Olsen was a crewmember of the "St. Roch" in the 1920s. :0004 - Photographer and historian Richard Finnie lectured on "The Truth about the Canol Project". Richard Finnie was employed as the northern advisor and historian to the United States Army Engineers constructing the Canol Project from 1940-1942. :0005 - In January 1981, Doug Heard of the NWT Wildlife Services spoke on "Caribou: Sex and Death Where the Nights are Long". :0006 - In February of 1981, Dr. Otto Schaefer lectured on "Native Food Resources and Traditional Dietary Habits: Their Value from a Nutritional and Medical Viewpoint and the Effect on the Health Picture of Native Populations Observed Consequent to Rapid Change of their Traditional Dietary Habits." Dr. Schaefer was a physician in Aklavik, Pangnirtung and the Yukon prior to founding the Northern Medical Research Unit in Edmonton. :0007 - In April 1981, Anne Gunn lectured on "Men and Musk ox". Anne Gunn, a member of the Canada Wildlife Service from 1973 to 1978, joined the NWT Wildlife Service in 1978.

The recordings contain 5 interviews with Claire Barnabe, L.F.G. (Bob) Borden, O.S. (Sid) Chapin, Richard S. Finnie and Frederick B. "Ted" Watt . The interviews were conducted by the NWT Archivist, David Leonard in 1980.

The recordings are of the Dene Nation General Assembly held in Fort Good Hope in July of 1980. Item 0001 covers July 22; 0002-0004 July 23; 0005-0006 July 24; 0007-0010 July 25; 0011-0015 July 26; 0016 July 27.

The material has been divided into three series. Series A (sound recordings) has been subdivided into 3 sub-series. Series A, Sub-series 1 - consists of eight recordings (:0001 to :0008) of an alcohol workshop conducted by the Dene Nation at Snowdrift in 1980. Series A, Sub-series 2 - consists of three sound recordings (:0009 to :0011) of Dene fiddle, drum dance and hand game music recorded in Snowdrift in 1980. Series A, Sub-series 3 - consists of seventeen interviews conducted in 1980 (:0012 to :0028). Series B (text) consists one of administrative file on the Oral History Compendium and one file with summaries of three interviews. Series C (photographic) is a colour print (:0029) of Frank Tetcho and his wife Madelaine at Trout Lake.

The recordings, often referred to as the Dene Music Project, were made at four different Dene communities and each performance consisted of numerous songs. For identification purposes, each performance or recording session has been given a unique item number regardless of the number of physical tapes or songs it may incorporate. Included among the recordings are the master reels (:0009) compiled from a selection from original recordings. These reels were to be used in the production of the published record. Reference cassettes for most of the recordings are available. The textual records consists of documentation on each of the recording sessions. The black and white photographic negatives and corresponding contact sheets were taken during the recording sessions. Final appraisal and selection of the photographic negatives (items :0010-:0088) was completed in March 2013. Items :0004, :0006 and :0008 - original masters are cassettes. All other items have reel to reels as original masters.

Records include interim and final reports from the Special Committee on Housing and recordings of the public and other community hearings. The DAT cassettes were copied from the original audiocassettes in October 1995; the recordings are in a variety of native languages and contain simultaneous translations. The transcripts of the recordings are grouped as follows: Baffin/High Arctic Tour, June 1984; Western Arctic Tour, July 1984; Southern Mackenzie Tour, August 1984; Yellowknife/Kitikmeot Tour, September 1984; and the Keewatin Tour, October 1984. The November 1984 interim report is available in both English and Inuktitut syllabics.

Items consist of an interview with Mabel Braathen, a lecture given by former bush pilot Punch Dickins, and an interview with A.W. Jolliffe.

Many of the sound recordings are poorly identified. Sound recordings include soundtracks for films, interviews, special effect sounds, Inuit throat singing, and government programs such as the series entitled "Behind Closed Doors - A Series on Spousal Assault in the Northwest Territories" and "So You Want to Start Your Own Business". The moving images include copies of: "You Can't Grow Potatoes Up There"; "Koukdjuak Crossing: Caribou Tagging on Baffin Island"; "Bathurst Inlet Caribou" (may also be titled: "To Have Forever: Hunting the Bathurst Caribou Herd"); "Nikko Island", "Wood Bison"; "Kellett's Storehouse"; "Yellowknife"; "Caribou"; "Heritage Centre Spots"; "Kissiliriyeet"; "Gordon Lake"; "Decisions"; "Future"; and "Anik Info Spots" (air prints). The helical scan videos consists of a Keewatin Economic Development Conference and the film "Hire North".

The recordings contain an interview with George Boots conducted on March 13, 1985.
