Reference Collection

This series consists of reference and resource materials collected and acquired by the GSCI. Included in this series are library materials consisting of non-GSCI publications; reference, research and resource materials that are not related to specific GSCI projects; non-GSCI language reference materials; and materials and biographical information related to Gwich’in history, communities, community members and elders.

Library materials in this series include books, reports, papers, journals and conference proceedings on various subject matters. Reference, research and resource materials in this series include articles and papers; books; reports; digital atlas on CD; newsletters; bibliographies and research compendiums; copied archival materials; and interview transcripts.

Language reference materials in this series include books and booklets; dictionaries; grammar materials; language lesson materials and recordings; language conference materials; and language reports.

Gwich’in historical materials in this series include informational materials and correspondence relating to Gwich’in material culture such as canoes, snowshoes, fish traps, houses, caribou fences, songs, dances, fiddling and clothing and a copy of a Gwich’in history/timeline.

Biographical and community related materials include newspaper clippings; stories, biographies and other writings; funeral programs; obituaries of elders and anthropologists; press releases; a listing of elders; printed photographs; and correspondence.

The series includes a journal from 1926 that possibly belonged to an Oblate father and possibly came from the Andre family's Tree River Camp on the Mackenzie River.

This series consists of general administrative records from the GSCI’s main office in Tsiigehtchic and the Research Director’s office in Yellowknife. Records include general project and program materials, informational materials on GSCI staff and positions, and administrative materials and some correspondence.

The materials related to projects and programs include correspondence; proposals; financial statements; contribution agreements; summaries; work plans; reports; field notes; and transcripts and interview materials.

The series includes informational materials relating to the GSCI, its staff and positions within the GSCI. These materials include a profile of the GSCI, staff biographies, and job descriptions and advertisements.

The series includes administrative materials from both of the GSCI offices regarding GSCI administration, office administration, external organizations and inquiries made to the GSCI.

Correspondence

This series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence in the form of letters, faxes and printed emails. These records document the various aspects of the GSCI’s work and daily activities and often include enclosed or attached documents. Records in this series relate to GSCI administration and governance; office administration; financial matters and funding; the Gwich’in Tribal Council; Gwich’in organizations, councils and communities; external organizations; programs and projects; reports and publications; researchers; permitting and licencing; and events and conferences.

Gwich'in Tribal Council

This series consists of records documenting the Gwich’in Tribal Council’s (GTC) role in the governance of the GSCI and joint work conducted by the GSCI and the GTC. Records include materials from the GTC’s Annual General Assemblies, Annual General Meetings, Board of Directors meetings, strategic planning and annual reports, and correspondence, reports and planning materials from projects the GSCI and GTC worked on jointly.

The materials related to the GTC’s Annual General Assemblies, Annual General Meetings, Board of Directors meetings and strategic planning include correspondence, meeting material packages, agendas, notes, minutes, motions, resolutions and materials relating to an interview with Ingrid Kritsch for the 2003 Strategic Plan. This series also includes GSCI presentations and annual reporting materials, such as projects lists, as well as GTC Annual Reports from 1994 to 2018 which include GSCI’s Annual Reports.

This series includes records from projects the GSCI worked with the GTC on, including Land Claim Implementation, self-government work, and transboundary work with the First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun. Records include correspondence; meeting agendas and minutes; proposals; reports; self-government curriculum and workshop materials; audio recordings of interviews and meetings; and reviews and comments of the cultural and heritage chapters of the Gwich’in Self-Government Agreement document.

This series also includes a map of the Gwich’in Settlement Region showing surface and subsurface features.

426 · Fonds · 1926-2018, predominant 1993-2018

This fonds consists of records documenting the activities of the Gwich’in Social and Cultural Institute from its establishment in 1993 until its transition into the Gwich’in Tribal Council’s Department of Cultural Heritage in 2016. The fonds includes some records of the Department of Cultural Heritage from 2016 until 2018. The material has been arranged into 38 series based on seven functional categories:

  • Administration includes nine series documenting the governance and administration of the GSCI. The series included in this category are Gwich’in Tribal Council (426-S01); Governance (426-S02); Executive Director (426-S03); Research Director and General Administrative Materials (426-S04); Finance (426-S05); Correspondence (426-S06); Gwich’in Organizations, Communities and Events (426-S07); Other Organizations, Institutions and Associations (426-S08); and Website (426-S09). These series include meeting packages and minutes; strategic planning materials including GSCI’s five-year plans; annual reports; GSCI Executive Director files from 2004-2016; office, staff, project and other general administrative materials; financial statements and reporting materials; funding proposals, applications, reports, contribution agreements and service contracts; correspondence files; meeting materials, minutes, reports, proposals, presentation materials and informational materials related to Gwich’in and non-Gwich’in organizations, institutions and associations; website planning materials including funding applications, contribution agreements, financial statements and content planning materials; and general correspondence within each series.
  • Consultation with Government includes three series documenting GSCI’s consultation and interaction with the federal and territorial governments. The series included in this category are Government of Canada (426-S10), Government of the Northwest Territories (426-S11) and Government of Yukon (426-S12). These series include correspondence; proposals; reports; funding proposals and reporting materials; workshop and presentation materials; informational materials; and curriculum planning and development materials.
  • Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Policy and Regulation includes three series documenting the GSCI’s work in traditional knowledge policy development, land use planning and management and permitting and licensing. The series included in this category are Traditional Knowledge Policy (426-S13); Land Use Planning and Management (426-S14); and Researchers, Permits, Licences and Use Agreements (426-S15).   • Repatriation includes two series documenting the GSCI’s work in repatriating Gwich’in heritage materials and knowledge through a number of projects. These series consist of project, planning and produced records including correspondence; funding proposals, contribution agreements and terms of reference; reports; copies of publications; audio and video recordings; and photographs, slides and negatives.
  • Recognition of Historic and Cultural Sites includes three series documenting the GSCI’s work for the recognition, protection and management of Gwich’in historic and cultural sites. The series included in this category are Gwich’in Territorial Park (426-S18); Burial Sites (426-S19); and Historic Sites and Heritage Rivers (426-S20). This series consists of records documenting GSCI’s COPE - Committee on Original People's Entitlement re-translations project (2006-2017), records documenting the publishing of an edited volume of the oral histories and legends recorded by the Committee for Original Peoples’ Entitlement (COPE) in the 1970s and copies of COPE interviews from the NWT Archives. Records in this series include correspondence; informational materials on COPE and the history of the tapes; listings of tapes and resources held by the Gwich’in Language Centre, NWT Archives and the Boreal Institute Library; the “Life Story of Julian Andre” by Julian Andre; photocopies of handwritten stories; transcripts and other textual records on diskettes; and copies of COPE audio recordings.

Records in this series related to the Gwich’in Language Centre are administrative in nature and include correspondence; budget materials; funding proposals and contribution agreements; a draft Five Year Plan; and reports including activity reports. Records in this series related to the development of the Gwich’in Language Plan include correspondence; budget materials; funding proposals, contribution agreements and reports; work plans; recommendations; and copies of the Plan and Implementation Strategy. Part of Gwich'in Tribal Council – Gwich'in Social and Cultural Institute fonds

This series consists of project, planning and produced records documenting the GSCI’s Tsiigehtchic Genealogy Workshop project. This project was the Gwich’in Enrolment Board’s contribution to the GSCI’s Roman Catholic diocese and family tree genealogical work. Genealogy workshops were held in 1995 and 1996 and the project was restarted in 2010 with interviews regarding family connections being conducted in Tsiigehtchic, Inuvik, Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk and Fort McPherson. A community workshop was held in Tsiigehtchic in 2011 to review family charts and a verification workshop was held in Tsiigehtchic in 2013 to record the pronunciation and meanings of people’s Gwich’in names. From this project, a genealogy database and five family tree posters were created.

Project and planning materials in this series include correspondence, funding proposals and contribution agreements, project proposals and interview questions and consent forms. Produced materials in this series include reports and video and audio recordings of interviews and workshops. This series includes a ledger of birth, death and marriage certificates from Fort McPherson and Tsigehtchic and an indexed registry of families and individuals.

Archival Projects

This series consists of records documenting projects undertaken by the GSCI to document, preserve and update their archival material. These projects include the Digital Archive Project and the development of a Strategic Archive Plan in 2003-2004, the Photo Digitization Project in 2007, the Digitization of Gwich’in Archival and Research Materials project in 2010-2011 and the Materials Update Project. Records in this series include correspondence; funding and budget materials; reports; inventories; notes; a How-To document; database printouts; and CDs containing computer backups, database materials, sound archive database materials and transcripts and recordings from place name and ethno-archaeology projects.

Science and Culture Camps

This series consists of records documenting the science and culture camps conducted by the GSCI. These projects involved youth, community members, professionals and graduate students, and often included audio or video recordings of interviews and other events as well as extensive photography. This series includes planning and administrative records, camp materials and produced materials. Planning and administrative records include correspondence; funding proposals; materials related to planning, organizing and running the camps; job postings; course outlines; and permission forms and information provided to parents. Camp materials include programming materials, handouts and resource materials. Produced materials include reports; student journals; photographs, negatives and slides; videos; and a poster titled "1996 Delta Science Camp at the Mouth of the Peel" and printed colour and black and white copies.

This series consists of non-project related GSCI publications and posters and related planning materials. Records in this series include correspondence; draft texts and final copies; GSCI brochures; outlines, drafts and printed photos related to the GSCI Career Brochure; Gwich’in knowledge posters; a poster about the Dempster Highway and a poster made by GSCI for Mary Kendi’s 95th birthday.

This series consists of records related to conferences, workshops and meetings which cover Gwich’in specific topics as well as general policy, research, cultural and heritage issues. Included in this series are GSCI workshops as well as conferences, workshops and meetings of other organizations, many of which GSCI staff attended, presented at and/or were involved in organizing. Records in this series include: correspondence; conference, workshop and meeting materials, minutes, notes and reports; GSCI presentation materials; informational materials; and video of the Gwich’in Elder’s Sessions at the Wisdom Engaged Conference in 2015.

Partner Projects

This series consists of project, planning and produced records documenting projects that were not initiated by the GSCI but in which the GSCI were partners and provided significant information and assistance. Gwich'in Ethnobotany

This series consists of project, planning and produced records from the GSCI’s Gwich’in Ethnobotany Project (1997-2009) and audio and video recordings from Alestine Andre’s Master’s thesis work on Gwich’in ethnobotany.

Records in this series from the Gwich’in Ethnobotany Project document field work, research and the recording of oral history information, the writing of Gwich'in Ethnobotany: Plants Used by the Gwich'in for Food, Medicine, Shelter and Tools, the preparation of plant specimen kits for schools and the creation of the Gwich’in Ethnobotany Web Module. Project and planning records include correspondence; contribution agreements and funding proposals; field notes; plant descriptions and labels; drafts of reports, articles and Gwich’in Ethnobotany; press releases for launch of Gwich’in Ethnobotany; drafts and edits of materials for the Gwich’in Ethnobotany Web Module; and reference materials. Produced records from the Gwich’in Ethnobotany Project include copies of Gwich’in Ethnobotany; copies of the article “Spruce Trees and Gwich'in Traditional Knowledge” published 2015; photographs; slides; video recordings; and a transcript from the Knut Lang Camp in 1997.

Alestine Andre wrote her Master’s thesis on Gwich’in ethnobotany based on the traditional knowledge of Ruth Welsh and the work she did with Alan Fehr for the GSCI and Aurora Research Institute. The video and audio recordings from Alestine Andre’s thesis work are of field work and interviews with Ruth Welsh.

Archaeology

This series consists of records documenting the GSCI’s archaeological work and activities. Records include project, planning and produced materials from GSCI and non-GSCI archaeological projects, archaeological reports from the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre which include GSCI projects and copies of a Conservation Manual for Northern Archaeologists from 1991.

GSCI projects documented in this series include the Tsiigehnjik Ethnoarchaeology Project (lower river) 1994-1995, the Tsiigehnjik Video Project 1994-1995, the Tsiigehnjik Ethnoarchaeology Project (upper river) 1994-1995, the Martin Zheh Ethnoarchaeology Project 1995-1996 (Field school) (also referred to as the Tsiigehnjik Ethnoarchaeology Project 1996), the Gwich'in Territorial Park Archaeology Project (1995), the Fort McPherson Archaeology Project 1999, the Peel River Ethno-Archaeology Project 2000, the Fort McPherson Archaeological Excavation and Peel River Survey 2002 and the Fort McPherson Ethno-Archaeology (Heritage) Booklet 2003-2005. This series consists of records documenting the GSCI’s work with the Gwich’in Renewable Resources Board (GRRB) on traditional knowledge projects.
