Part of Dogrib Birchbark Canoe Project fonds

The Dogrib Birchbark Canoe is a broadcast-quality Tlicho (Dogrib) language (with English subtitles) documentary outlining the history of the birchbark canoe in Canada and specifically its importance to the Tlicho. The video documents the construction of one canoe, its design based on a similar birchbark canoe built by Chief Jimmy Bruneau in the late 1960's. This project was a collaborative effort on the parts of the Dogrib Treaty 11 Council, the Dogrib Divisional Board of Education, the elders of Gameti (Rae Lakes) and Behchoko (Rae), the Rae/Edzo Friendship Centre, and the Archaeology Section of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. The final product is a concentration of over 20 hours of raw footage shot over an eighteen day period in the spring of 1996. This shorter version of two broadcast versions is 29 minutes in length.
