Records date from 1888-1991 and consist of published reports, pamphlets, brochures and bound ordinances. The pamphlets and brochures relate to the Legislative Assembly's operations, symbology, projects, interest in a pipeline and talks of forming a new territory (Nunavut). Records also include the rules of the preceding body, the Council of the Northwest Territories, as well as the rules of the Assembly from 1984 to 1991. There are published reports on priorities for the North, election reports, electoral boundaries, administrative structure for Nunavut, a spousal assault task force report, and a Denedeh government proposal for restructuring of the Government of the Northwest Territories.
Also included in this accession are ordinances dated 1888 and 1895 and bound ordinances dating 1950 through 1981. There is also a book of statutes from 1985.

The file consists of a chronological index of Orders in Council relating to the Northwest Territories and Council from 1873-1932, copies of Orders from 1905-1932, and a chronological list of Dominion Acts Relating to the Northwest Territories from 1869-1927.

The series consists of signed minutes of the Council of the Northwest Territories during the period of appointed Council members. The minutes of the first five sessions are not signed, but they are clearly intended of to the be the official proceedings of the Council, and the signed versions can be found in Series 3. Regular and special sessions are numbered from 1921-1950.
A large number of attachments have been included with the minutes, but this has not been done consistently. These attachments include agendas, copies of correspondence, reports, some Ordinances (including some drafts), and minutes of related committees, including the Interdepartmental Reindeer Committee, Yellowknife Board of Trustees, and Hay River Board of Trustees. Some maps and photographs are also included.

The records detail the regular and special meetings of the Council of the Northwest Territories from 1921 to 1951 (sessions 1 to 201). There are several parallel series containing minutes, agendas, and attachments, including reports, Orders in Council and Ordinances, correspondence, and occasionally photographs or maps, relating to the agenda items. products of meetings (Orders in Council, Ordinances) of the NWT Council. The first series contains the "official" set of files, including signed minutes for most meetings. Other record sets that cover some the same meetings, but may include different and more attachments, are found in the second and third series: Records of Council Members and Secretary's Files and Session Papers. The Records of Council Members series also includes records of the Advisory Board on Mining Regulations (1922-30). The last two series contain Ordinances and Orders in Council related to the Northwest Territories and associated indices.
