Records consist of correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports, memorandums, policies and chronos. The records relate to the division's activities, the programs delivered and the transfer of responsibilities for forestry and fire management from the federal government to the GNWT. There are also files documenting the monitoring of animal species, particularly caribou. Some files were produced by the division's predecessors.

Records include files related to land use planning, pipeline development, oil, gas and mineral exploration in the Beaufort Sea and Northwest Territories, water management and planning, departmental administrative and financial records and committee records from the following: Mackenzie River Basin Committee, Canadian Arctic Resources Committee, Arctic Waters Advisory Committee, Renewable Resources Development Committee, Environmental Advisory Committee on the Arctic, Policy Advisory Committee and the Northwest Territories Water Board.

Some of the records were produced by the Canadian Wildlife Service. Records include maps and memos related to land use, correspondence from Hunters and Trappers Associations (HTAs), caribou studies, submissions to the Beaufort Sea Environmental Assessment Panel and outfitter reports.

Records relate to Land Use Planning, harvest studies, Management Steering Committee, Dene-Metis negotiations, Departmental Planning Committee, program reviews and mineral policies.
