    This fonds consists of approximately 56.27 meters of textual records, 1,600 colour and black and white photographs, 26 audio recordings and 18 videos. The photographs depict medical facilities, medical personnel, procedures and health education activities. The audio materials are primarily related to health education, health studies and reports on healthcare in the north. The videos are primarily health promotion video related to nutrition and diet.

    The textual material is derived from the various iterations of the divisions responsible for policy, planning and reporting; directorate and finance support activities, population health issues; community health issues; board support services, child protection and family services. The records cover issues such as legislative initiatives, departmental organization and strategic planning, the Territorial Hospital Insurance Service, the transfer of health services to the GNWT from the Federal Government, the decentralization of health services to the communities, health and social services matters in self-government negotiations, and significant reports including the Cuff Report (It's Time to Act), the NWT Health Report, NWT Health Status Report and Ambulance Services Report. The records include files related to the management of the department including: Senior Management Chronos, Executive Committee files, records from the Recruitment and Retention Committee, the Joint Senior Management Committee and Senior Management Committee files.

    The textual material also includes correspondence with regional health authorities and boards, program development and delivery records, reports and promotional materials. These records cover programs such as Brighter Futures, Community Action Fund, Social Agenda Community Demonstration Projects, Traditional Knowledge, Community Wellness, nutrition, promoting nursing in the NWT, midwifery, clinical standards of practice, and many programs directed towards promoting healthy lifestyles. Included within these materials are records from various committees such as: the Community Wellness Committee, the Aboriginal Wellness Coalition, the Committee on Nursing Education, the Northwest Territories Pregnancy Risk Score Steering Committee, the NWT Clinical Practice Committee, The NWT Advisory Committee on Immunization, the Antimicrobial Steering Committee, the NWT Maternal and Perinatal Committee, the Childhood Fatality Review Committee, the Mental Health Task Team, Joint Standing Committee-Independent Seniors, the Addictions and Mental Health Committee, and the Traditional Knowledge Working Group.

There are also information pamphlets on a wide variety of topics for public information as well as career promotion within the Department. There are several copies of an internal department newsletter entitled N.W.T. Healthbeat. There is also one large information kit on northern cuisine published in French.

    This fonds consists of records from the Finance and Administration section of the Mackenzie Regional Health Service. They include organizational charts.

    This fonds also consists of one Betacam SP videocassette from the Contaminants division of the Mackenzie Regional Health Service. The title of the promotional film is Environmental Contaminants in the North.

    This fonds consists of records regarding the creation of the Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority (YHSSA) as well as records generated by YHSSA during its existence.

    Records from the Executive offices include files from Senior Management meetings, Public Board meetings and Special Board Meetings, as well as by-laws.

    Records from the Finance and Administration division include planning files related to the creation of YHSSA, some generated by its predecessor, the Yellowknife Area Office of the Department of Health and Social Services. Also included is a file documenting public consultations in the Yellowknife area regarding departmental strategic planning.

    Records from the Community Health division include publications, conference planning, educational materials, and presentations relating to public health programming.

The material covers a variety of topics including community wellness reports, cancer fact sheets and reports, seniors information guides, reports on child welfare and the social agenda. The material also includes health promotion materials concentrating mainly on smoking. There are several issues of the internal newsletter "The Feel Good Gazette" and five promotional posters for primary community care.

    Included are files related to promotional materials produced by the department. Subjects and titles include safe sex, "Women's Health Care Rights, "Getting Ready for your Visit to your Health Care Provider", women's self esteem. There are also records related to abortion, AIDS, and the provision of dental services. The videos are primarily promotional videos produced by or for the department. The video pertain to proper nutrition and include the following titles: "Northern Nutrition", "Facts about Junk Food", "Healthy Eating and Exercise the Northern Way", "Buying Food", "Power over Diabetes", "Nutrition During Pregnancy", "Infant Nutrition" and "Dene Bush Food and Canada's Food Guide". Some of the videos are available in English, Dogrib, Chipewyan, South Slavey, North Slavey and Inuktitut.

    This fonds consist of approximately 7.40 m of textual records and 156 photographs from the Department of Health.

    The bulk of the material relates to various committees in which the Department of Health was the lead agency. There are records from the Pharmacare Formulary Advisory Committee, Medical Advisory Committee, Health Coordinating Committee, Committee on Medical Legal Concerns, Minutes from the Certified Nursing Assistants Committee, Health Facilities Planning and Construction and the Community Health Advisory Committee. In addition, there is material that was generated by the Management Services Division. The records, dated 1982-1990, are primarily administrative records including minutes and reports from various committee and secretariats.

    In addition there is material which was generated by the Mackenzie Regional Health Board and dates between 1988-1993. The files relate to Nursing Conferences and Committees, St. John Ambulance Committee, Maternal Prenatal Committee, Community Health Committee and Senior Management Meetings. There are also records from the Department of Social Services relating to Social Services Management Committee Meetings and Health and Social Services Training Programs.

    There are records from the Legislation and Policy division, including relating to the amalgamation of the departments of Health and Social Services, as well as records relating to the transfer of Baffin region health assets from the federal Department of Health as well as records relating to the Medical Patient Search Project (MPSP).
    The MPSP project was undertaken between 1988 and 1991 to search for the location of medical patients who were sent south for treatment and subsequently lost to their families.

    Material from the Health Promotions and Education Division includes published reports, brochures and newsletters from the Department of Health dating from 1977-[1995]. The material includes reports on health conditions, ambulance services and poison control. There are also information pamphlets on a wide variety of topics for public information, career promotion within the Department, an interpreters handbook, the internal departmental newsletter N.W.T Healthbeat, as well as one large information kit on northern cuisine published in French.

    Also included within the fonds are 140 colour slides and 16 colour photographs from the Legislation and Policy division. The slides were part of the Information Services section's slide library. The images include photography of health services, staff, infrastructure and programs offered by the Department of Health and date between 1960 and 1981. The colour photographs are related to the Medical Patient Search Project, and feature cemeteries where northern patients were known to have been buried.
