This fonds consists of 45 DAT audio cassettes, 125 audio cassettes, approximately 7.7 meters of textual material and approximately 1000 photographs.

These records, in the form of textual material, sound recordings and photographs have been divided into eight series: 1) Oral History Interview Transcripts; 2) Audio Recordings which consist of 45 DAT audio cassettes (archival masters) and 124 audio cassettes (original masters) of oral histories, and 1 audio cassette (original master) of Michif language excerpts from the 1994 Michif Language Conference; 3) Archives Photocopies; 4) Subject Files; 5) Family Files; 6) Administrative Files; 7) Photographs; 8) Miscellaneous.

The archives photocopies from Series 3) consist of copies of archival documents such as petitions, treaties, government reports, significant government correspondence, and copies of extracts from books and articles. Photocopies of some of these were placed in subject files (Series 4) and family files (Series 5). These files contain information relevant to certain subjects (i.e. education, communities, Hudson's Bay Company) or families.

The administrative files in series 6 concern the administration of the Metis History Project from 1972 to 1979. As well, eight boxes of primarily administrative textual materials were donated when the Metis Nation ceased operations in 2001.

The materials in series 8 (Miscellaneous) consist of drafts of the Metis History book, index material for this collection and information on how to use this collection. Other textual material includes transcripts of interviews conducted by representatives of the Metis Heritage Association in 1992. Elders interviewed include Beatrice Daniels, Sam Norn, Albert Lafferty, Rene Mercredi, Joseph Masuzumi, Frank Laviolette, Dora Tourangeau, Len Heron, Helena Mandeville and Mable Heron. Also included within this series is the transcript of the Michif Language Conference, held on February 19-20, 1994.

Records relate to June Helm’s work as an anthropologist and her study of the Tłı̨chǫ people in the Northwest Territories. The material includes the following: various Oblate and Anglican mission records of deaths, births, mission histories and priest diaries from Fort Good Hope, Fort Norman (Tulita), Fort Franklin (Délı̨nę), Fort Simpson, Wrigley and Rae (Behchokǫ̀); several notebooks containing hand copied Liber Animarum (genealogical data copied in 1958) of Fort Good Hope; several published articles, field notes, correspondence and draft papers related to the reproductivity of the Fort Good Hope Dene; published articles, correspondence and notes related to northern infanticide; correspondence and documents concerning the requirement in the contract between the National Museum of Canada and field ethnologists that all recorded findings of field work be deposited in the museum; material related to Dene leadership and Camarade de Mandeville; letters from Jean Marie River; field data related to Tłı̨chǫ leaders and leadership in Rae and Dettah and correspondence from S. Rushforth related to Prophets (Tłı̨chǫ) and power.

Records consist of a volume of Dene family genealogies. Father Emile Petitot, who was at the Fort Good Hope Mission from 1864 to 1873 and from 1876 to 1878, is believed to have begun this genealogy register circa 1864. The book was updated periodically by Father Petitot's successors, until the 1930s.

One journal appears to be a copy of a register of baptisms, and marriages from the Roman Catholic Church at Riviere Coutre Jaune [Yellowknife River?] The other journal contains genealogical information copied from the Fort Norman Mission. The dates of the information range from the mid-1800s until the 1940s. Some of the entries copied from the Fort Norman Mission are in French.

Textual records consist of a copy of an adoption order, a baptism certificate, and newspaper clipping of the Duke of Edinburgh's visit to Yellowknife in 1956. The photographs are of the Wyss family and their home in Yellowknife; in addition there are images of Jock McNiven, a women's curling team, Con Hydro and Negus Mine.

Records date from [1938-1969] and relate to wildlife management. The files include lists of people eligible for general hunting licenses, game officer reports, trapping area listings for the Aklavik region. Also include among the lists are geneaology (family lists) for the Inuvik and Arviat (Eskimo Point) areas. Many of the listings related to general hunting licenses contain personal information such as place of residence and birth dates of individuals.

The textual records consist of a copy of hand written family trees for the Ruben and Thrasher families compiled by Esther Atkin Ruben. The images were collected by David Ruben and show groups of people from the Tuktoyaktuk, Baillie Island and Paulatuk areas. Item :0001 was taken at Tuktoyaktuk in 1945 and shows (l to r) Simon Kubluk, Charlie Thasher, Brother Michael Dobrowski, (behind) Peter Thrasher, Billy Thrasher, Alice Thrasher (Billy's second wife), George Thrasher, and Henry Anderson. Item :0002 was taken at Baillie Island in 1930 and shows (l to r) Mona Thrasher (Billy's first wife), his baby sister Misanik (deceased), Billy Thrasher, Mary Thrasher Kotokak of Tuktoyaktuk (deceased), Bertha Thrasher Ruben of Paulatuk (married Billy Ruben) and George Thrasher. Item :0003 shows Anglik Ruben, Shukialuk Susie Ruben and Mona Ruben Wolki (Paulatuk). Item :0004 shows Bertha Ruben with her children: Bernie Ruben Kuptana of Tuktoyaktuk, Christine Ruben Kudlak of Paulatuk and Joe Robert Ruben of Paulatuk.

This fonds consists of 10 cm of textual material, 1 microfilm reel, 2 film reels, and 1 Umatic video. The textual material includes dictionaries and grammars compiled by Father LeMeur and Father Metayer. In addition, there are two reels of the film "Arctic Missions of the Mackenzie," and a copy of the film on one Umatic videocassette. This fonds also includes one reel of microfilm containing a volume of Dene family genealogies.

This fonds consists of eight 60-minute audiocassettes. In March of 1988, the Northwest Territories Archives Council held a workshop on oral history. One of the exercises of the workshop was for participants to interview each other on their personal histories.

This fonds consists of approximately 8.2 meters of textual files and 3 videos from Justice Mark de Weerdt. Textual records include: personal and biographical information; files from his law practice in Yellowknife; files from the law practice of John Parker; files from his time as Judge on the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories including his “Daybook” files (outgoing correspondence); files on various subjects and cases of interest including aboriginal rights, equality and the law, and constitutional development in the Northwest Territories. The records also include copies of speeches delivered by Mark de Weerdt, files of personal correspondence between Mark de Weerdt and friends, family and colleagues. The fonds also includes a scrapbook of newspaper articles he published under the pen name Quintillian and 3 video tapes. The videos include a two part family history produced in 2000, and a celebration of life video on the life of Mark de Weerdt produced in 2003 2003 containing a series of still images of his life.
