        The photographs document the construction of a winter road between Fort Providence and Inuvik in 1963-1964. The 8 mm film appears to depict a flight from Calgary to Norman Wells. The 16 mm film depicts the loading and unloading of barges through various communities along the Mackenzie River, including Hay River, Fort Simpson, Fort Wrigley and Fort Good Hope. The cartographic booklet is comprised of maps of the Mackenzie River.

        The materials formerly belonged to Ross Laycock, who worked on the first winter road up the Mackenzie Valley from Fort Providence to Inuvik in the 1960s.

        Series contains the records of Lizel Holdings, a holdings company, and Yellowknife Tog Shop Ltd., including documentation of the construction of a department store building at 50th Avenue and 50th Street in Yellowknife (5002-5006 Franklin Avenue). This building opened in 1968 and housed the new Yellowknife Radio store as well as The Tog Shop clothing store. Both J.I. Glick and Harold Glick were Directors of Lizel Holdings, while Harold Glick, Zelda Glick and Elizabeth Maybroda were the Directors of the Tog Shop Ltd., which was incorporated in 1966. J.I. Glick was the mortgagee for the Tog Shop Ltd.

        Series also includes some records relating to the design of La Gondola restaurant.

        Records contain correspondence between the Department of Transportation with Aboriginal Affairs and Justice, discussion and decision papers, briefing notes, draft access agreements, and proposed agreement amendments concerning the negotiation between the Department of Transportation and Tulita District Land Corporation for access to Tulita lands for construction of a bridge over Canyon Creek and realignment of a highway.

        The majority of records consist of files that deal with the Northern Management Program (NMP) administered by the Department of Transportation in conjunction with Arctic College. The NMP was designed to provide training opportunities for people from the USSR and other northern countries. The training revolved around construction and desing techniques for northern communities. The program was in part the result of the USSR/Canada exchange program which allowed engineers, contractors and other professionals involved in construction to visit the other country to see other construction techniques.

        This fonds consists 4.7 m of text, approximately 1972 photographs, 44 maps, 17 architectural drawings, and 6 audio cassettes relating to Robert R. (Bob) Janes' work in the Northwest Territories as an archaeologist, first Director of the Territorial Central Museum (later the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre or PWNHC), and Executive Director of the Science Institute of the Northwest Territories (SINT). The textual records include archaeological field notes and reports, papers and articles written and collected by Janes, reviews, correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, PWNHC building planning and operation files, newsletters, newspaper clippings, EXPO’86 planning files, and PWNHC and SINT publications. The photographs, maps, and architectural plans document archaeological work at Fort Alexander, Willow Lake, and Dealy Island, the construction, opening, and early operations of the PWNHC, the unveiling of the Sir John Ross plaque in Taloyoak (Spence Bay), and the research station at Iglulik (Igloolik). One plan shows preparations for the Northwest Territories pavilion at EXPO’86. The sound recordings include interviews and a recording of a church service for Janes’ ethnoarchaeological project at Willow Lake.

        The images depict many communities in the NWT, including Yellowknife, Rae (Behchoko), Fort Providence, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, Fort Norman (Tulita), Inuvik, Fort Good Hope, Colville Lake, and Wrigley. There are also images of other human impacts on the landscape, such as seismic lines, mine sites, and dams, as well as construction camps and industrial sites.
