Scope and content

This series consists of records relating to censuses and surveys conducted of the Metis population of the Northwest Territories and to gaining membership in the Metis Association/Metis Nation at the Local or general level. The membership records include completed application forms and membership lists. Census and questionnaire records include completed forms for the 1977-79 and 1993 censuses and the ca. 1980 questionnaire, compiled results for the 1977-79 census and ca. 1980 questionnaire, enumerators’ logs from the 1993 census, and a project guide, registration forms, application control lists, tracking forms, and correspondence for the 1977-79 census. Participants from the following communities were included: Arctic Red River (Tsiigehtchic), Little Doctor Lake, Fort Reliance, Kakisa, Aklavik, Colville Lake, Fort Franklin (Deline), Fort Good Hope, Fort Liard, Fort McPherson, Fort Norman (Tulita), Fort Providence, Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik, Pine Point, Tuktoyaktuk, Sachs Harbour, Norman Wells, Rae-Edzo (Behchoko), Yellowknife, Dettah, Lutselk'e, Iqaluit, Grise Fiord, Arviat, Big Buffalo River Junction, Cambridge Bay, Cape Dorset, Coppermine (Kugluktuk), and Rankin Inlet, as well as people currently residing in other places of Canada and the United States.

The records fit within the central filing system under classification 200.7, however, many of the census and questionnaire records had already been gathered into records sets. Additional related records and membership records were added by the Archivist, particularly from the boxes of miscellaneous files, and some forms moved to centralize forms from the same location. The Archivist also centralized into one file the compiled totals of the questionnaire results.

Some of the records have been damaged by mould. Appropriate care should be taken when accessing these records.
