Administrative history

The Centennial Centre was established in February 1969 to help coordinate the celebration of 1970 as the centennial year of the Northwest Territories. In January 1969, the Council of the Northwest Territories approved the celebration of 1970 as the centennial of the Northwest Territories. A Centennial Planning Conference was held in February 1969 at which time delegates from across the Northwest Territories supported the primacy of the notion of community driven initiatives. Plans for local community events, Inter-Community and Territorial events were developed. The Centennial Centre, lead by E.A. Ballantyne as the Director General of Centennial was tasked with assisting with the planning and coordination of these events as well as managing and dispersing resources allocated by the Federal and Territorial Governments. The Centennial Centre also took the lead on territorial initiatives such the Centennial Newsletter, the Centennial Calendar, The Centennial Medallion, The Centennial Map and the Centennial Ball.
